Arsenal are poised to make a move for Rangers keeper Allan McGregor after watching him in action against Hearts.

The Gunners sent a scout to Tynecastle to check up on McGregor and it is believed they will launch a £5million move for the Scottish international at the end of the campaign.

The likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa and Spanish side Sevilla have all been credited with an interest in the past but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to test Rangers' resolve with a summer move for the shot-stopper.

Meanwhile, boss Walter Smith hopes to add to his squad in January but he is unsure if he will be able to strengthen, with reports linking him with Derby's Kris Commons and former Rangers ace Nacho Novo, who now plays for Spanish side Sporting Gijon.

"We'll just wait and see who we can get," said Smith. "People are free to speculate and we will continue to work on getting someone we'd hope will help us in the second half of the season.

"I don't know if or when we will be able to get somebody in or not. The January window is never an easy one in which to bring in any player.

"I would hope we can find something to our liking which is available to us in the next week or so. If not, we'll go with the group we've got."
