That guy seems fairly ill informed, and using Apple as a synonym for the mobile gaming market only makes him come across as a fanboi.
Apple make more than just the iPod, iPad and iPhone. Steam has been available for OSX since April 2010, and does exactly what he is berating irrespective of whether you buy the digital or physical version. In fact, single use, online activation has been common for PC games for longer than that - it's one of the reasons why DLC on that platform was generally free.
Also you only ever own a licence to play a game, not the game itself. The EULA of the game will likely prohibit state lending, reselling etc. (But who bothers to read the EULA. )
