Hi all,

Does a 'Fringe Reception Reports' sub-section exist anywhere on the DW Satellite Forum...? I have searched and can't find anything... did one ever exist...?

I used to post numerous 'Fringe Reception Reports' with pictures on another Satellite forum... perhaps some members here might have seen my posts on that other forum...?

I am asking about this because that particular field of the Satellite hobby is what I enjoy the most and I am really missing being able to post these kind of reports...

Do you think that there are enough members (who are sufficiently interested in such a sub-section) to make it a viable proposition... and do you think that other DW members would also like/enjoy contributing to such a sub-section...?

I would be very interested to hear your thoughts (for or against) before I posted the subject in the 'Forum Ideas and Suggestions' section...

Best Wishes,
Zorch

err just one thing what is a Fringe Reception Reports ?????????

I'd love to see your reports, some of my favorite channels are fringe reception. I would have liked to know that I could revive these before I invested money.

I receive them perfectly though posts I read before said I needed a bigger dish and was still hit and miss if I could receive them.

You got my vote!

pink helmets is very knowledgable on this.

i too am starting to look into it, as im in the fringe area for viasat, and more and more people are now asking about this

viasat is ok with a 1M dish in the midlands

in south west wales, people have said you cannot get the HD transponder, even with a 1.5M dish

I'd be interested. Go for it if DW agrees.

Best wishes from,

Gibson.

Hi again all,

Thanks for all your feedback so far...

@phawk754

'Fringe Reception' is the term used to describe the possibility of viewing channels from certain satellites that are outside or on the very edge of the satellites intended reception 'Footprint'... the satellite is probably not intended for the area/country in which you live... or you are on the very edge/borderline for successful reception of that satellite... thus 'Fringe Reception'.

Various factors are involved in the successful reception of such 'Fringe Reception' satellites... including...

Dish Size
Line of Sight
STB Tuner Sensitivity
LNB Phase Noise/Noise Figure
Good Co-ax Cabling/Connections
Accurate Dish Positioning
Weather/Atmospheric Conditions
Patience

I hope this helps...

are you still getting 36e (african channels)ok??
and is 7w ok??

Hi again dj999,

@Eutelsat W7 at 36.0°E

I can still receive 2-3 of the DSTV (Sub-Sahara beam) frequencies on good days... but nearly all of these frequencies have now been paired with Russian (Left & Right Circular) identical frequencies which has had the effect of reducing their previous signal strengths substantially... but there's still loads more channels to watch on this satellite...

@Nilesat 101/102/201 & Atlantic Bird 7 at 7.0°W

Nilesat 101/102

I can still receive most of what is left of the Vertical frequencies on good days... and a few of the Horizontal frequencies late night...

Nilesat 201

Nothing to report on this satellite as a local geographical 'Spotbeam' is employed...

Atlantic Bird 7

This is a brand new satellite at the 7.0°W position (replacing Atlantic Bird 4A)... and on most days I can receive all of the frequencies... both Horizontal and Vertical...

KingOfSat reports 37 active frequencies on this satellite resulting in 570 TV/Radio channels being currently available...

Hi extraspark,

The answer to your question is in post #9

The transponders listed in post #9 detail all of the frequencies that currently carry the Viasat HD channels on Astra 4A at 4.8°E

You state that you are using a TM 5400 receiver... this is not a HD receiver... therefore (and confirmed by your transponder list) you cannot pick up any of the four DVB-S2 frequencies...

12.341 H [27500] 3/4 DVB-S2 [8PSK] 59.9Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]
12.399 V [27500] 3/4 DVB-S2 [8PSK] 59.9Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]
12.437 V [27500] 3/4 DVB-S2 [8PSK] 59.9Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]
12.456 H [27500] 3/4 DVB-S2 [8PSK] 59.9Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]

The four DVB-S transponders that you are currently picking up...

11.900 V [27500] 3/4 DVB-S [QPSK] 38.0Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]
11.919 H [27500] 3/4 DVB-S [QPSK] 38.0Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]
12.015 H [27500] 5/6 DVB-S [QPSK] 42.2Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]
12.608 H [27500] 3/4 DVB-S [QPSK] 38.0Mbps [BSS Nordic Beam]

These DVB-S transponders do include a few Viasat HD channels (see below) but they are all MPEG-4 signals and your TM 5400 can only handle MPEG-2 signals...

TV3 HD Norge
Viasat 3D
NRK1 HD
Viasat History HD
Viasat Nature HD

If you really want to successfully receive the DVB-S2 (MPEG-4 HD) transponders/channels... you will need to acquire a HD receiver and most probably a bigger dish and also a better LNB...

I hope this helps...

Best Wishes,
Zorch

Thanks for the information Zorch,
I will look into a HD reciever when I have enough cash etc.
