I've found Macrium Reflect Free to be very handy for creating backups.
It takes an image of your entire hard drive, and allows you to restore it exactly onto any hard drive thats big enough. If your hard drive bombs out - you can just restore it to a new disc, and your pc will boot as if nothing has happened to it.
It even works with Vista and Windows 7.

forgive me for sounding a bit thick not too good with technical stuff but my comp has crashed (im on my laptop now)so the question is if i download this prog do i just insert it in my crashed comp and perhaps hey presto.or does it do a back up just in case your comp crashes and then use it pse.
