Hi guys

i have a good italian friend that i buy my fig trees off and man are they sweet

he told me that he plants them by doing cuttings

now i wanted to ask does any one know how to successfully make a fig tree cutting and replant it

even a good link will do

There are two methods of propagation:

Figs are easily propagated by layering. Bend a suitably low branch to the ground and where it meets the soil, wound the stem by cutting part way through. Loosen the soil and add compost.

Peg the branch down using U-shaped pins and bend wires either side of the wounded area. Cover with more soil, water the ground and place a flat stone on top.

Within 12 months you will have a well-rooted large layer. Cut the branch on the tree side and pot up or plant out your new fig tree.

Or from Cuttings:

Most fig varieties are well reproduced by cuttings.

The best period is at the end of the winter.

Cuttings should have a length of 12-15cm.
Generally not root hormone is needed.

Cuttings must be of the previous year's growth( no more 1 yrs old).
Take them from the lower branches of the fig trees.

They contain a more optimal cytocynin/giberrilin ratio for rooting.

Take care so the buds are not wounded or absent on the stems.
If so, don't use them.

cuttings should also be insect/disease free
good luck
