E2 on usb?

hi, i'm wondering if the new E2 images can just be flashed with flashtools to the flash memory on the box? or does it need to be on usb stick?
also, why do people have it on usb and still keep their other image?(multibooting)can't the 2 go on the hdd and then choose?

they can go on hardrive but it would mean its spinning all the time,the reason for putting on usb instead of flash is so it has more space for addons and stuff
