Does anyone know if theres anything that can speed up my downloads. I connect through a normal modem with BT and when i start to download things it starts off at about 20KB/sec and after about 10 secs drops to about 1.5KB/sec so downloading anything big takes ages. Any help welcome.

Cheers

yes m8 what u need to do is download some money from a cash point and spend it on a broadband connection.....LMAO (sorry)
i also am using 56k modem and they are just slow m8 nothing u can really do but i am going to look into NTL (Broadband) see how that goes.......

Huggis quite right. I am with Telewest at present. I can expect between 5.5 to 6.5 kbps which is painfully slow when downloading something large. I only got 4.2 tops when with BT. I think that Telewest broadband is my next move. I'm not sure but I think that its about £25 per month which lets face it does not even cover a decent drink.

I wouldn't go back to 56k not after tasting broadband

hi m8,
i've also got a 56k modem, and i can't get cable yet (or bt broadband),
i use "download accelerator plus" from:
www.speedbit.com
it claims to speed up downloads by upto 30%,but i've found it is more like 10%, and it allows u to pause etc.
the free download gives u 4 channels of simultaneous downloads, which speeds things up a bit (but still too slow at 56k)
hope it helps,
owenzy
p.s.
it also helps to have just ur modem plugged in to ur line box as this reduces line noise (and ups the "ren" No. of ur line
owenzy

its normal for the download speed to drop within a few seconds m8, you could give bt a call and ask them to turn the gain up to the maximum which does make a difference(although only slight) to your speed allround!

Cheers for the replys, ive had the download accelerator for a few months and dont think it makes any difference and as for broadband most of the houses up here havent even got gas so cables out. Anyone know anything about the satellite cards?

Internet via satellite with EOL or someone. I know the cards are about £150 with obscenely high download speeds, but i dont want to go out and get one if they turn out to be crap

hi m8,
have a look at
www.computershopper.co.uk
in the search field type :-
satellite isp
it gives the low down on whats available and the average cost.
owenzy

Hi mate, just to let you know that it is pos to change the download speed and connection speed and increase it slighty - is this pos on a 56k we ask ourselves ?? If you go to regedit.com and read up about the modem tweaks it says that you can edit stuff so you dont send/recieve large packets you do smaller ones. So if a packet is lost it doesnt have to send it again - confusing ?? Just remember you will be editing something that if you dont know what you are doing could harm your computer. I have tried it and had sucess, but its up to you..Good luck !!
