I seem to have a problen updating my operating systems, both ME and XP.

Using Wind*ws update, It scans for possible updates and then gives me the option to review them and select which ones I would like to download and install, the download box appears but each component is skipped in turn and in the end nothing is installed

All ActiveX controls and such are set correctly at my end and I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems

Please excuse as I am a little tipsy here. But if you have legit software you will no doubt look into it further.

But M soft dont like anyone who dont give them MONEY!!!

And I predict that one day soon, we will all be changing our Operating Systems. Err the non payers I mean!!!

Because they will not be selling the OS licenses then. Only leasing them. You will pay for what you use, or try and hack through it. But it probably wont be worth the effort.

Linux (or summit) here we come!

You might have guessed Diamond but my OS aren't originals. The thing is that someone I gave a copy of XP Pro to managed to update it successfully whereas I cannot get any of the goodies like critical security updates and such lol.

i suggest that you get a licence number that is valid then try again..most if not all numbers that are in use with hooky s/ware will be blocked to stop updates

try ur pm m8

I'm already using one of those ones m8

I don't think my ME OS has been around much though

Suppose I'll have to find downloadable service packs somewhere.

Spectre M8, funnyily enough I had the very same problem myself yesterday (and my XP is legit!!), I think it may well be a problem MS's end.
However, this morning I found this on another forum:

Quote:
I did some searching and found a work around for everyone that is having problems with Windows Update. Go to control panel - network connections - right click the connection you use - properties - select Internet Protocol (tcp/ip) - properties - general tab - select use the following DNS server addresses: for preffered DNS server : 198.6.1.1 for alternate DNS server:198.6.1.2 select ok and close. Now try Windows Update
End Quote:

I'll try it when I get home this afternoon....

I was trying to update a system but couldnt because I didnt have administrative rights to do it.

Logged in as administrator and tried again and I had no problems.

I suggest you try this if you havent already

Cheers for the offer Carpe, but I will have a go at Lone Gunmans idea for the moment. Sorry, I didn't mention my two PCs were networked peer-peer and share the internet connection - I don't know a great deal about networking could this be a problem ?
