The story goes in my local area a man was murdered with a knife through the heart while on the way to take pictures of the snow on some local scenery apparently the killer was trying to steal his camera.

The local paper printed a 2 page article from the killers family (link here + pasted below)

I would be grateful if you could send the editor or the journalist your comments on what you think about the article. In my opinion its an absolute disgrace. or post your comments here please.

FAMILY STANDING BY LEE'S MURDERER
A MURDERER was today defended by his family as he faces life behind bars for stabbing Lee Phipps to death.

And we can reveal that 21-year-old Scott Nichols's mother pleaded for help through the pages of the Gazette when he was just 11 years old – and already on the downward spiral that would lead to him ending up with Mr Phipps's blood on his hands.
Nichols's loved ones have broken their silence as they prepare for the two-month wait until the Newcastle Crown Court hearing at which they will learn how long the killer must spend in jail before being considered for release.
While admitting he has a disgraceful history of bad behaviour behind him, they have blamed his actions on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – a condition his mother, Alison Sword, says she also suffers from.
Today, they tell us how Nichols the petty thief and robber is adjusting to life as Nichols the killer.

...

"ONE main thing we want to make clear," said Alison Sword, the mother of killer Scott Nichols, "is that we sympathise with Lee Phipps's family. What they have gone through must be terrible.
"But we have to get our side across. We have to explain Scott isn't as violent as people have made out and he isn't the kind of person that people have said.
"Since he was convicted, there have been things printed about him he can't defend and we have to do that on his behalf – people have to see him for what he is, not what they are led to believe."
Speaking from Nichols's grandmother's home in King George Road, South Shields, Mrs Sword was just doors away from the home her son's victim shared with his mother. Lee Phipps had walked past the same house on his way to Cleadon Hills on March 2, where he was to take photographs of the snow.
He was stabbed in the heart on a dirt track in what Nichols claims was a bungled robbery for the victim's camera bag.
Mrs Sword claimed: "Scott must have been terrified in order to use the knife because he's not a violent person.
"But when he got home, I couldn't tell there was anything wrong at all.
"Even when he was arrested I didn't believe it was him and he denied any involvement. But he was very quiet. Normally he would have been out and about but he just stayed in. He was withdrawn."
Nichols, of Borough Road, South Shields – who already had 37 convictions to his name including robbery with violence – was eventually charged with murder, which is when the gravity of the situation started to hit home.
His sister Keely Holmes, 27, from West Harton, said: "When he phoned me from the police station, I was just expecting to pick him up but he told me he was charged and was in court next day.
"That's when he started crying. That's when he told me he had done it. He kept saying 'I can't believe what I have done'. I think the charge was when it hit him properly and I think it wasn't until the details of what had happened were in the paper that it clicked with him exactly what he had done."
Mrs Sword, who blames some of her son's behaviour on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), said: "Between then and his guilty plea has been horrendous for all of us."
She added: "No words can describe how I feel that my son is a murderer. This is something that all of us have to live with for the rest of our lives.
"I have no choice but to cope with it. All of us have the rest of the family around us – but Scott will just have to manage in any way he can, even though he won't discuss how he feels with us.
"He is still very withdrawn in prison and has lost a lot of weight. I think he has changed as a person because he understands what he has done."
n Nichols will find out in early January how long he will spend behind bars before he is considered for release.

...

ON February 3, 1997, the Gazette ran a story with the headline Lock my boy away!
Although there were no names in the article, it was a heartfelt plea from Alison Sword about her 11-year-old boy Scott Nichols, who had been offending since the age of just five.
At the time of publication, Nichols was at a special school in Bath but had already been assessed by specialist medical teams and had even undergone brain scans to try to find the root of his criminal behaviour, which included burglary and theft.
At one point in his criminal career, he was implicated in 20 crimes – aged just nine.
But his offending was getting worse – and even though in 1997 he had only just passed the point where he could have received his first criminal conviction, he was driving his mother to the point of desperation.
In the story, his mother said: "I've bought special locks for the windows and I've even nailed the front door shut at nights but he still gets out.
"One time the police brought him home and he had disappeared out of a window before they had left the house.
"Social services have tried placing him with a school near Bath for kids with behavioural problems, but he just kept running away. The school was making progress with him but he wouldn't stay put.
"He needs to be in a controlled place that he can't get out of – and that means a secure unit.
"I'm convinced it's the only way of pulling him round."
Ironically she added: "I know there is some good there, if only we can bring it out."
But a council spokesman said: "We try to find the best place for the needs of the child.
"All care for children with educational and behavioural difficulties is costly and it is not always available locally.
"We have looked at this boy's case very closely and believe we are giving him the best care we can.
"Making an application to place a youngster in a secure home is a very serious move which needs a Government order.
"We do not feel it appropriate in this case."

due to the lack o comments I was wondering if I was wrong to fell annoyed at the story.

how a newspaper can allow a killers (with 27 other previous convictions) family to defend him really narked me. particular attention to the mothers comments- he must have been frightened to pull a knife (while he was robbing the man) really annoyed me- and the I need to let people see him for what he is (murderer) not what they have been led to believe.

thought some of you might have had some views on this

I agree with you m8. I think people have got so used to crap journalism nowadays that they just accept it. The story was disgraceful.

theres more to the story as well. the mother of the dead man was on one of them itv programmes acouple of years ago- nightmare neighbours- she was on talking about she had to instal cctv on her house due to attacks on her house and her family by her neighbours- there was footage shown of the attacks- I dont know if this is directly linked but it seems fishy to me that the killers grandmother lived a few doors away- the kid that did it should have the key locked away

"it is disgracefull", but it wont stop him from getting a life sentence

lets hope he gets his arse sha**ed in nick

Scumbag .. he'll get he's the : asshole

I can see ya point mate.. But the shame off the fact is That knife crime is getting worst.. I personally know 2 People that have been killed this year. Both was 17 years old.. And one was a friends son who's killer got Six years

Your life is worth nothing Now.. And the law does very little to help and the press do even less...

life as a chav

totally agree with u gav i read it in the front page of the gazette. i think we should bring back the death penalty and execute tw@ts like him.

at least it would save the problem of overcrowded prisons and the fact that we pay to keep them alive when they've took somebody elses life/lifes.

the justice system is a disgrace in this country

eye for an eye I agree bring back the death penalty

This is what happens when we let idiots breed!!

James Whale on Talksport radio often, tongue in cheek, says that all boys should have a vascectomy when born and then get a licence to have kids when they are older!!

As I get older - I see more and more people who are clearly not able to look after themselves let alone a family. People running about with no sense of common sense or decency. No self control or reason.

As for the paper - its typical of the do gooders and politically correct lefties to allow a killers mother to defend her son - he was obviously an animal from day one and not helped by his upbringing.

Its the same on every issue these days - cant say or do bugger all anymore - the worlds gone mad.

I hope the bastard gets a life means life tarif - but it wont happen - he will be out in 10 years - still in his prime - ready to hurt other unsuspecting decent people. If what I saw on Panorama last night is true - he wont even be watched properly when he is released.

Its about time us Brits stood up and said no more - I always thought politicians were elected by the majority to do our will - I dont know anyone who asked for speed cameras, fuel duties, unlimited immigration, wars against countries not even capable of hurting us, or a hunting ban - the list goes on and on!!!!

ive always said bring back the death penalty, that way their organs can be used to relieve some of the pressure on the NHS as well as reducing the corwded prisons and save the tax payer money

it seems the killers get more sympathy than the victims. this is the problem in todays society and they know that'. their 'human rights' should go out the window when they break the law. and the judges should be passing out tougher sentences. they should fly them off and put them on a deserted and island and let them fend for themsevles.

Shocking! Hopefully the jury will be full of decent people and they will see the truth!

'He must have been scared to use a knife'

He shouldn't have been carrying a knife in the first place!

Throw the book at him!

just sent this to the paper

dear sir
i am from the ***** area and your report has just been sent to me regarding the murder of lee philips.
i find the space you have given to the family of scott Nicholas offensive and very poor judgement indeed on behalf of the papers editor. the fact is the parent of this murderer have failed the boy and not the system as his mother is trying to push the blame on to. he was born a normal boy just like us all and he has left a trail of fear and destruction over the last decade or so in his area. his mother can say what she likes she has a major part to be blamed in all this for not bringing him up to respect the law and his comminity, she is the one who he took his moral lead from in his formative years, she is the one who when he very first started to show problems either looked the other way or left it to late to get the professional people in who might of been able to lead him down another path, i do not have one ounce of sympathy for his family because they are partly responsible for where he is and who he is today. i am now 42 years of age i was brought up in poverty on a council estate and my father was a drunk and we where surrounded by alike people. the thing is my mother was a proud mother who had morals and gave us a deep sense of right and wrong and went hungry for us to have a meal on the table, we had manners for our elders deeply installed into us. my elder brother and i have never been in trouble with the police so to the people who blame the society around the offender are wrong its the moral views of your parents that make you who you are. im sure as we speak there are a lot of people who will sleep very well tonight knowing that Nichols is locked up for a long time his past record is appalling mother has a said that she asked for help all them years ago but it was too late even then. as he had by then become what he was and that's a prolific offender, she had the chance the first time he was in trouble to get this sorted and i don't mean by agencies i mean within her own family whether it be an older uncle or granddad but im sure there was some one who could and should of intervened then. we cannot have a one on one police force who parents expect to sort out the problems of young tearaways long after the parents have left them to bring themselves up. at aged nine he was a prolific offender to me that is quite revealing he must have had been given a lot of personal freedom at that age to commit those offences.
i have an eight year old daughter and she has never been more than ten houses away from my home in her short life because i want to know where she is all the time and if you know that you also know your child is not offending!!!

The only thing you can believe in a paper is the date.

Well done geofthechef for writing the letter. I just dropped them an email as well giving them a piece of my mind.

jackdee- remember the jamie bulger killings, well venebles and the other kid got just what you asked for; a new id and a home in australia paid for by the tax man.

add, ahdd, this disorder, that disorder blah blah blah, so many excuses for thiefing&murdering little gits. only in the western world do we give murderers rights

dont get me started on the local press. I have been absolutely disgusted with my local rag on quite a few occasions recently and now refuse to even look at it. Its just a medium for mediocre journalists to get their own opinion across without any investigation or justification.
i was hoping it was only my local paper that was this bad, but this bit of " journalism " proves that is not the case.
nice letter geoffthechef, hopefully the editor will take notice and take some action.
