Fred the eternal optimist was being a pain at work, it didn't matter what anyone said, his only comment was "well it could be worse"
One day all his workmates decided it was time to paint him a picture so bleak and disasterous, that even Fred wouldn't be able to say it could be worse.
So when Fred arrived at the canteen, one of the guys commented to the group as a whole, "did any of you hear that Billy from accounts, came home early on wednesday afternoon and caught his missus in bed with Andy from marketing, and absolutely flipped, he grabbed his pump action shotgun, shot his missus, shot Andy and then turned the gun on himself and blew his head off".
There were mock gasps from everyone in the room, except Fred, who in his inimitable manner, just shook his head sucked in through his teeth and said "terrible, still could have been worse"
Everyone just stared in disbelief until one said "could have been worse? could have been worse? how in gods name could it have been worse?"
Fred drew himself up to his full 6 foot and slowly replied "well if Billy had come home early on tuesday night I would be dead now"
Moral: no matter how bad things look they could always be worse
