Celtic unhappy at SPL 10 move for structural change

Civil war is threatening to break out in the Scottish Premier League, with Celtic at odds with their rivals over organisational reform.

The 10 clubs outside the Old Firm are to propose an alteration to the league's voting system at a special general meeting on 12 April.

They want a 9-3 decision to push through major change in Scotland's top flight rather than the current 11-1.

The 10 will also seek a more even distribution of revenue.

However, just how they intend to push through these proposals is unclear.

And Celtic are deeply unhappy with the suggested changes.

Sources close to the Parkhead club argue that the Old Firm contribute around 85% of the SPL's revenue, while they are disappointed by the other clubs getting together without consulting them.

Celtic fear that changes to the status quo could jeopardise future sponsorship deals

It has also been suggested that changes to the voting structure or distribution of income could threaten any takeover of Rangers, who are currently in the hands of administrators.

It is understood that potential buyers of the Ibrox club may be put off by any uncertainty over future revenue.

“"The rest of us are fed up of the Old Firm. Forget Rangers for the moment, what we have here is one club dictating to the top end of Scottish football.”

Anonymous Scottish club chairman

Asked whether the situation threatened potential civil war between the 10 and the Old Firm, one chairman told BBC Scotland: "It's not potential civil war. It's on."

Another chairman added: "I hope it doesn't end up in civil war. You have to ask why Celtic are so upset at changing to a 75% rule that would exist in many other businesses.

"Why are they scared of change and a 75% majority running the league? They will do all in their powers to control Scottish football. They have no concern for Scottish football, only themselves."

He added: "No clubs are of a mind to change the distribution of money that radically changes the situation to the disadvantage of Celtic and Rangers.

"But you have to ask them why do you really need this power?

"We must drive through change in the next 18 months or we will go backwards. What the ten must focus on is to shape the game going forward, to bring the change we know the game badly needs."

A third chairman told BBC Scotland: "The rest of us are fed up of the Old Firm. Forget Rangers for the moment since they are in administration, what we have here is one club dictating to the top end of Scottish football.

"They are not going anywhere, English football doesn't want them and they have done their damnedest to get out of Scotland for the last 10 years. Do they want to play in a league of two?

"We want to change the voting rights to be able to change the game for the better.

"We need to have a stronger championship or SPL2 in place. Relegation can cost clubs £1.5m and we need to provide a softer landing place. We want change for the good of all of Scottish football. This is about democratic change."

Re: Celtic v Dundee.u Goals

We'll maybe not get quite an amazing result as 7 - 1 tomorrow but I'm sure Celtic will pump them rotten and wee Sally will be claiming jobseekers in the next few weeks. :)

Quote:
SEPTIC have been punished for the fifth time in as many years by Uefa for the conduct of their supporters, taking the total amount of fines imposed on the club by European football’s governing body in that period to over £100,000.

The latest sanction handed out by Uefa’s Control and Disciplinary Body was confirmed yesterday, a £21,000 fine for displaying an offensive banner and setting off fireworks during the Europa League Group I fixture against Udinese in Italy on 15 December.

The charge was originally scheduled to be heard on 26 January but was postponed for a month by Uefa due to a backlog of cases.

It was subsequently reported that Uefa had put Celtic’s hearing back again, until today’s date of 29 March, for the same reason. But a Uefa spokesman yesterday revealed that the Control and Disciplinary Body had, in fact, found Celtic guilty on 23 February and issued the €25,000 fine.

Unlike previous occasions, details were not published on Uefa’s official website. Celtic, who immediately told Uefa they would not appeal against the verdict, also made no public acknowledgement of the fine.

“It was mistakenly reported that the case was postponed again until March,” said a Uefa spokesman last night. “We do not publish every decision of the Control and Disciplinary Body on our website, there are so many cases.”

A section of the 800-strong Celtic support at the Friuli Stadium unveiled a banner with the message “F*** Uefa” and let off flares shortly before kick-off at the match which came just three days after the club had been fined £12,700 for “illicit” pro-IRA chants from their fans during the earlier Group I game at home to Rennes on 3 November.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell, who had condemned the chanting at the Rennes fixture and subsequently pledged to stamp it out, was visibly angered at the form of protest made by some of the club’s followers in Udine.

The day after the match, he described them as a “rogue element” and accused them of “embarrassing” the club.

Neil Lennon, the Celtic manager, was even stronger in his denunciation of those involved, insisting they were “hell bent on damaging the reputation of the club”.

There is no doubt that Celtic, who received Uefa’s Fair Play award for the positive behaviour of their supporters at the 2003 Uefa Cup final in Seville, have now compiled a dismal charge sheet from the Nyon disciplinary body as a result of the recidivism displayed over the last five years. In March 2007, the club received a nominal £420 fine for two incidents of plastic bottles being thrown towards the pitch at the San Siro Stadium during a Champions League match against AC Milan.

Seven months later, Celtic were found guilty of improper conduct by supporters and lack of organisation during another Champions League game against Milan at Parkhead which saw one fan enter the pitch and confront visiting goalkeeper Dida.

Celtic were fined £25,000 on that occasion, half of the amount suspended for a two-year probationary period, while Dida received a two-match suspension for unsporting behaviour after reacting theatrically to the incident.

In November 2008, a supporter was able to invade the pitch once more during Celtic’s home Champions League match against Manchester United.

Uefa found Celtic guilty of improper conduct again, with a late kick-off to the match also cited as reason for the punishment, and fined them £42,400.

The latest fine means Celtic have had to pay out a total of £101,520 to Uefa since 2007.

LENNON IS TAINTING CELTIC'S TITLE GLORY DECLARES NICHOLAS

Celtic manager Neil Lennon

Friday March 30,2012
By Scott Burns

CELTIC legend Charlie Nicholas last night declared the only person tainting the Hoops forthcoming Title glory is manager Neil Lennon.
With the team boss now facing three SFA disciplinary charges Nicholas believes he has become an " embarrassment " to the club and taken deserved credit away from the players.

Nicholas is adamant that the focus should all be on a side that has been very worthy of claiming the SPL Flag instead of becoming a managerial sideshow soured by frequent rows over refereeing decisions.

"It should all be about the team and their achievements on the park but now it has become more about Neil Lennon, squabbling again with referees and how the officials helped to blow Celtic's treble. " he declared.

"It has come from a point where they were 21 points ahead and nobody could argue if they walked away with the title by more than 20 points because the players have worked hard and chalked up an impressive run.

"But that now seems to have gone and now and the manager is taking centre stage. Celtic are , of course, going to win the title but they should just go and do it the right way in my book instead of getting involved in more rows with officials.

"Lennon now seems to have a one-man agenda of I want this and that and the football, which has been this season's success story, is quickly being forgotten about. "

"He has built up all the goodness and now he is on the verge of throwing it all away again."

"Celtic are the best club on the planet when it comes to using paranoia but we have to get away from that."
