Is it worth putting video on CDs, as opposed to DVDs?

I always assumed that CDs could only take a short clip.

But then I saw an advert for episodes of the Sopranos on VCD which set me thinking maybe they'd take a full hour-long programme.

Can anyone give some sensible advice? Can VCDs be recorded on a bog standard CD writer? Will they play on any computer? Will they play on a DVD player in the living room?

Can I squeeze a movie onto two or three CDs? Now that would be very nice!

I can't afford a DVD recorder so any ideas gratefully received.

PS:
I have a cd writer and a dvd drive (read-only). I've seen ads for CD-video

hi majestyk

yes you can put video on vcd an the quality can be excellent dependant on the way you encode it.

you can fit up to 80 mins of video on one vcd.

yes they can be recorded on a bog standard cd writer.

nero is normally the most recomended software.

yes they will play on a computer.

an yes they will play on a dvd player .

best bet is if you dont already have one go to one of the richer sounds stores around the country .

as i believe they are one of the best when giving out advice.

you can normally squeeze a movie onto 2 vcds if its avi or mpeg.

but you can squeexe it onto one vcd if its divx.

as long as you are using the right software.

hope this helps m8.

You can also record dvds onto vcd format but you have to rip them and re-encode them first it is not difficult once you have the right software wich is all freely available. Depending on your proc speed it can take a while . severel hours but it does its self.
If you need any tips on what software to use for ripping etc and where to get it just post and ask.

It seems impossible at first but once youve done it once its easy.

Thanks guys
