RI:SE will not be replaced by a new live show, Channel 4 CEO MArk Thompson has confirmed.

Speaking at the network's winter launch today, Thompson said that 7am-9am slot would instead be filled with a variety of different programmes.

"The expectation is that we will move from a single programme to a schedule, with different programmes from different audiences," he said. "Channel 4 is at its best when offering a variety of programmes. Morning is when we should be experimenting and trying different programmes."

Rumours suggest that popular reality series The Salon and repeats of US comedy series Friends could form part of the new schedule.

Despite ruling out a full live show, Thompson admitted that he hoped the slot would retain some form of live element.

"I believe mornings on Channel 4 should be entertaining, should feel contemporary and fresh, feel like they are of that morning," he added. "A live flavour is an important part of the mix."

The last edition of RI:SE is due to go out on December 19
