A series of specially-commissioned programmes covering the controversial issue of asylum will air on Wednesday, July 23 on BBC One.

The special programming begins with Kilroy at 9am, and culminates in a live programme, Asylum: Face the Nation at 10:35pm. Lorraine Heggessey, BBC One Controller, explained:

"Asylum is a controversial issue that really matters to our viewers. Through a range of specially commissioned programmes BBC One will shine the spotlight on all sides of this complex discussion."

Theme days are not a new feature for BBC One, having started with Your NHS last February. This time round, the line-up is as follows:

You The Judge, 8pm
A live interactive programme hosted by Fiona Bruce and Rageh "Scud Stud" Omaar, putting viewers in the position of an immigration official and deciding the outcome of four asylum cases upon which the Home Office has already decided. This format was last rolled out on the Cracking Crime day. Viewers can participate by phone, SMS, or digital interactive services.

Panorama: The Asylum Game, 9pm
A BBC reporter goes undercover through Britain's asylum system.

Asylum: Face The Nation, 10:35pm
A live studio session anchored by Dermot Murnaghan. Politicians and experts on all sides of the argument are challenged by viewers.

'Asylum' executive producer, Paul Woolwich, said: "While many are outraged by the alleged numbers of asylum seekers, the battles between the Government and the judiciary and the seeming inability of the authorities to get a grip of what some describe as a the crisis - behind the hysteria there are real people and some of them are in desperate need of our help while others are not.

"Telling the difference is a much harder task than many realise.

"What we're trying to do is separate fact from myth on the issue of those seeking safety in Britain."

Should make some interestin viewing can be a tricky subject
