Thinking of purchasing an athlon. Are the xp any better than the normal athlon thunderbirds? if so whats the main differences.

Any help appreciated.

The XP chips are designed for Win Xp says AMD, they are better and faster than the normal by the ammount of Mhz they run at.

saying that i have a friend that has 2 xp1500 on one motherboard and it's not that special.

The XP1800 isn't really an 1800 processor they just give it as a guide against the rival competitor pentium.

To get the most out of a chip like that you will also need a good fast hard drive

The XP CPU has a few diferences fom the old Thunderbird. It has SSE multi media instructions, more 3D Now Instructions, better cache management, it runs cooler that the older Thunderbird CPU and it's optimised for use with DDR ram.

I've read that more software will be written (optimised) to take advantage of the XPs new instruction sets because more people will be buying them instead of P4s (The XP1800 outperformed the P4 2GHz in most tests although it lacks SSE2)

I'm going to buy one soon, hope I'm not dissapointed
