My 16 year old son has just got an apprenticeship and is looking to get a moped for commuting.
I know next to nothing about motorbikes etc, can anyone give me some advice.

Heres what I've gathered from google >

2nd hand 50cc Peugeot or similar £500-£800 - What should I be looking for apart from not buying from another teen who has ragged the arse out of it. The usual mechnical stuff ie engine/drive belt/brake wear etc ?
3rd party F&T Insurance (£300-£500 excess) £500 - What company/broker is cheapest ?
CBT basic £100
Helmet & jacket £150 - Make & spec etc, also jacket to be worn all year round over overalls/hoody

Anything I've missed or should be aware of ?

Thanks

I won't go for the cheap chinese replicas. Build quality is normally bad. If cost is an issue then a year old branded scooter would be a better option.

Make sure he always wears his jacket and gloves, believe me even falling off at 10mph is no fun. And jeans at the very least definitely no shorts or trakkie bottoms. You come off at 30mph and you are potentially looking at skin grafts, you can get biker jeans with added armor if you feel he warrants it.

Been reading up on Chinese Scooter Club :: Home There not clones as in the Dreamedia sense, build quality is comparable with EU branded stuff. After all ASIA is the biggest market/user of scooters so it cant all be bad.

Thats my MAIN CONCERN, my son commented 'why do need a jacket,I will be wearing an overall&hoody'.
I told him helmet/gloves/jacket at all times, but I need to get the right ones if you know what I mean to make sure he actually wears them.

Thanks oneman :)

is £500-£800 your budget or thats what speedfights are 2nd hand ?

speedfights are nice and kids love em but they are highly nick-able, like all scooters really but speedfight more so

I had a Piaggio Zip and they are very nippy on pull away but 30mph top end, pull away is quite important on a small engine scooter on roundabouts and pulling out from junctions if need be
the Zip is around £1200 brand new and quite stylish and also a top brand name Piaggio

Ive had 2 speedfight (both got nicked) , 2 Zips(1 got nicked) and now have a Vespa all 50cc so have a little experience :)

I would deffo look at the zip for all round smartness, reliability, nippiness and affordabity :)

Budget is £1000 tops...
Using Speedfight as a benchmark as they seem to be the 'NIKE' of scooters, but 2nd they are all fooked.
Looks will prob be deciding factor to him but I agree low end pull is important cos come 2 months he'll be saying its to slow etc.
Do you have input regards chinese scoots ?
Thanks rat

I bought a Chinese thing about 8 years ago for cheapness and what big mistake it was it was up to euro spec and everything
it would cut out and stall at traffic lights etc
I pushed it to work and left it at work because it wouldn't start many many times
it went back for repair twice and in the end it was just about to go to court and they refunded me best part of what I paid

so seriously in my experience I would recommend a well known make :)

Ill look back through my ebay and see if I can find the make and model, may be to far back though ?

Just found this >

quoted from elsewhere

China is... different.

There are probably HUNDREDS of Chinese scooter factories out there. Some will specialise in a certain style of scooter - maybe the commuter style, or the commander style, or the retro style, but generally they are working day and night banging out unbranded bikes. And it goes further than that - there are hundreds of factories making engines, and frames, and panels, and shipping these things out all over China to get built into scooters.

These unbranded bikes then arrive at huge distribution warehouses.

When an order arrives for a containerload of silver Skyjet Sonic 50cc scooters, they go pick fifty silver scooters with the right styling out of the stocks that can have arrived from any factory, stick Skyjet stickers on them, slap on Skyjet VIN plates, and load them into a container.

Let's say an order comes through for 200 Baotian Rebels in silver that look identical to the Skyjet Sonics? Same bikes will then get Baotian badges and VIN plates and will be shipped out.

The Peugeot V-Clic 50cc Scooter is made in China and retails at £1199 but seems to sell because of the Peugeot name. The same scooter but with slightly different body mouldings are sold as different makes just the same as many car makers sell their models under different makers names.
So it may be worth trying DirectBikes who sell a 50cc Sports Scooter that looks very much like the V-Click but sells for £499 plus £85 Delivery.

I had all this a couple of years ago when my lad turned 16. He wouldn't wait and went straight out and got a Chinese bike which was a pile of c?!p. I got a mate of mine to look at it and after almost completely rewiring it, it still didn't work. Then I got him a nearly new Yamaha Jog which came highly recommended. He fell off and gradually trashed it again. May just be my son but he had no appreciation of the value of the thing and just ran it into the ground! As far as a jacket is concerned definitely go for the goretex but tbh, getting him to wear that and gloves will be the difficult bit - it's not cool!
I hope he keeps safe on whatever you end up getting.

I didnt think you were having a go mate, I just didn't want everyone thinking I was a numpty! 

I didn't realise it was an old post either, it was just that I had been researching it for my daughter who wants to get a part time job (she's at college) to buy a scooter.
The scooter wasn't the problem, it was the insurance. For fully comp. it ranged from £979 to £6500 ffs.
Looks like she'll be getting herself a bus pass and some new clothes instead.
