Virgin have just notified me that the price of the broadband package I have with them is to increase by £2.50 in October this after last month trying to get me to have a Tivo box and phone for no increase in price for the foreseeable future luckily I never believe sales men and turned down the offer

I recieved a letter last week from Virgin saying the Sly Sports channels and the movie channels are going up as from the 1st October. So BT sport is not free then is it?.

BT sport is included for anybody with XL TV package, it pretty much a replacement for the deal they had with ESPN.

Price increase for sky channels is due to sky wholesale prices going up. Surprisingly I believe VM increase for sky is actually less then the increase sky customers are getting.

And the £2.50 increase looks like it for 20mb and 30mb customers who don't have any TV package.

UPDATE Virgin Media UK Warns of 1st October 2013 Broadband Price Hike - ISPreview UK

If you get a Tivo Box they inclue other options for free, maybe worth the upgrade (including a second V+ box for free

Thing is, were screwed until BT sort there sh*t out and get some fibre laid down for faster BB speeds. If you want fast speeds then your stuck with VM

BT have laid down fibre down and we get 30meg no probs

Think they are rolling it out but dunno what date they have set for the majority of the UK to have it. Even still, 30Mb against VM speeds is no competition. I understand 30Mb will do most people but when you phone up VM and try and blagg them your going to move, they know you haven't much choice if you want to keep there kinda speeds. VM certainly have the monopoly on BB at the moment.

30Mb??? We're doing well to get 3Mb ffs :(

Bet you thats with BT or someone still using copper lines?

Fibre with BT and Virgin is still delivered from the cabinet to your premises via Copper Cable, Until Virmin and BT pull there finger out we wont see what i would call Proper Fibre speeds until we have Fibre to the Premises

Thought VM provided fibre to the premises?

No they dont it is the same as BT Fibre it runs down a Copper Cable, Open your Box up inside the House and you will still see RG6 being used.

BT do offer Fibre to the Premises but generally only large companys have it done for speeds in excess of 500mb

nope, VM and Infinity both use FTTC (fibre to the cabinet). With VM you have coax copper (aluminium in some places) cable from street cabinet to your house. VM have done speed tests to 400mb using this technology.

FTTP (Fibre to the premises) would be the next step and is available in a very limited number of areas offering speeds of 1gb or more.

I pay vm £35 pm for 30m bb, basic tivo and phone I get about 34m avarage speeds

Thats my one thing I've learned today then :) as they say, you learn something new every day lol.

Anyone can have FTTP in any area they so wish i enquired a while ago but the Cost to have it installed as well as the Monthly Fee's is astronomical, And thats why Big Business can afford it

It was posted somewhere last year I think it was?? That virgin have tested their current system and seen successful speeds of 1.5Gbit.

Its was said that upto 3Gbit is possible??

Thats with docsis 3, fttc and the standard cable that they use now...

Ill have a scout round and try and find a link...

Can't find the exact thing I read... but if you stick 'virgin speed trials' into google you will see quite a bit about the 1.5Gbit trials...

And the usual questions, lol, who would need it ? I'd think about it based on priced and if it was reliable.

My thoughts exactly. .. reliability and price. .

But to be honest I think its just more like Virgin making a statement..
They have the technology, but realistically, will we as domestic customers ever see it??
