The long awaited roll out of Nagra 3 by V88g8n Media to encrypt their cable services has begun, with Leeds being the first area of the UK to be upgraded to the new system.

According to unconfirmed reports, it will be rolled out across the South of England over January, the Midlands by February, and the North West of England by March. By Easter, all of V88g8n Media’s cable services should be running with Nagra 3 encryption.

This will make it virtually impossible for anyone to view premium cable channels broadcast by V88g8n Media except by legitimate paid subscribers, resulting in a serious blow to existing cable pirates.

The news has long been expected, after Nagra 3 was rolled out in the Republic of Ireland earlier this year, and hardware upgrades to allow for it to be rolled out in the UK have been sent out through 2009.

While cable pirates will no doubt be disappointed that their favourite premium cable channels will no longer be available for free, V88g8n are offering two months free upgrade on their TV services to new and existing customers.

If cable services are no longer wanted, then Sky has been providing special offers on Sky + and Sky HD for the Christmas season to bring in subscribers to premium channels.

Of course, there are also options to use Freeview, Freesat, or even use satellite equipment to explore the range of Free To Air (FTA) channels, which do not require subscription services.

In the meantime, when approached by Techwatch for comment, a V88g8n Media spokesperson replied “We do not comment on security issues.”

so by easter we will all have moterised dishes :)

tbh I never bothered with ctv nothing good on 99% of the time, even being subsribed to newsgroup provider with ssl encrption like astraweb for 7 quid per month u can pretty much get any thing via p2p and it will be alot more faster/better quality then CTV/Satelite imo :)

i would rarther stick a folk in my eye than have a dish !!!!!

Better start saving up for a sub then. Chances of N3 being cracked are slender, given the amount of time it's been around in so many places. Don't see c/s as a way forward on cable.

My sides are sore after FTA101's reply. :))

But seriously, what does your above answer even mean? :err:

its means ..SLY & THE DISH ..IS CRAP!!!! WAT A LOAD OF rubish ... owww quick rush out & buy a dish just coz ..they tested n3 in leeds, plz! ......why pay £50 a month + £250 for a set up .....when u can just get m package with VM .+ A V+ BOX ,& bb, for half the price ..wait a fe months & see waht happens .......as we no cs is a option ..+ the hack will come out ..therres 2 much money on the table

assumign your right and people who want to make money will sort out a hack for N3 - why would they GIVE it to you? they wouldnt - what woudl probably happen (in this hypothetical scenario) is a closed source box woudl be released with a timebomb in it - to force you to buy a new box every few months - probably at a couple of hundred quid a time - after all - the only box on the planet that does N3 gotta be worth more than one that doesnt lol

a public crack/hack for N3 - not gonna happen - a private one - maybe possible but not soon and wouldnt help you

bitchign about it isnt goign to help - sayign it will come out evnetually so why should i spend the money to get a sat setup isnt gonna help

N1 is mortally wounded - nothign you can do will save it - it's only a matter of time - N3 is pretty much invunerable to mere mortals like us - I suspect it's essentially invunerable to demi-gods as well in terms of a real hack

so get used to the idea and in the time you have left find a hobby

SKY HD Box is more or less free now for new customers and they offer alot more HD channels than virgin do as well as more channels in general

i honestly see this as a massive loss to Virgin Media TV profit Sky offer better service, boxes, channels etc etc i think alot of people are with VM cos of the cheap easy hacks and 50mbit BB

there will be legit people out there who use because they cant have a dish

virgin has hd chs what sky dont have eg living hd. virgin said that next year it plans to have allmost all of its tv services in hd. sky is only better due to the fact there have more hd once virgin make there move i think sky will see a drop in subscribers because hd will be cheaper on virgin sky can never offer the internet speeds what virgin give nor can there offer the line rent as you have to pay thourgh the nose to bt so when all comes to all who is better off them who have sky or them who have virgin id say the virgin guy

isnt VM already at capacity on the amount of TV channels it can pipe down at any given chance? i think the quality of the picture on the less popular channels is alot better on sky compared to VM due to bandwidth limitations for TV channels

since everyone has 40"+ LCD TVs now its very noticable to those with decent eye sight

I cant see how VM can be cheaper than SKY when they are the company producing all the best channels that everyone wants

Only one reply to this, SKY SPORTS HD + MOVIES HD

Come back when you can watch that on virgin, and then we will talk.

But who in their right mind would take Living over something like Sky One HD? Yay, upscaled Law & Order from 2002. Sky's big selling points are movies and sports in HD. Virgin closed the gap a tiny bit with ESPN HD, but it's still not even close.

No, they said they "hoped" to have 20-30 linear HD channels by next summer. Get ready for Cooking HD, Shopping HD, and that sort of fun. :)

There's no difference. They take exactly the same feed of almost all the channels. The only significant difference is the HD channels, where VM use MPEG2 and Sky use MPEG4. Virgin used to encode Sky's movie channels to a higher standard than Sky themselves, but they've been the same for the last few years as well. Hideous low bitrate 544x576.

If you're talking in absolute terms, there's no connection between price and desirability, but Sky clearly have the better line-up of channels. It's essentially a premium service compared to VM's bargain bin service. Some are happy to make sacrifices to save a few quid, of course. If you start to factor in internet, phone and VOD, Virgin are closing the overall gap, though.
