Hey Guys

In short: Hard Drive gone bad, need to recover data.

In long:

2 x 500GB hard drives were connected inside my network drive enclosure and formatted using EXT3 filesystem in a RAID 0 array to make 1TB storage space.

Got this whole unit a few months ago and now one of the drives has (mostly) stopped being detected. The other one is perfectly fine and is being detected. I know this because I have hooked both of them up to a computer to check.

Seagate have already told me that they will not cover data recovery on the limited warranty, but they will replace the drive. I am waiting for them to get back to me on monday with any possible firmware upgrade as it shows up on their website that my model number and firmware revision is prone to a fault in the firmware. But the firmware upgrade is not available.

Without boring you lot half to death, i need to know is who should I go to if seagate cannot help me. Some places ar saying like £600 + for data recovery!! I can't afford that.

Isn't there any legal terms I could use and scare them into at least paying some partial payment towards recovery or helping me out themselves?

Does anyone know where I could find a reliable firm who would do it much cheaper than what I am being roughly estimated at the mo? I dont want to risk ANY data, so I am only looking for reputable firms who do not duff up the units.

Regards and thanks in advance

Asif

quite easy to do

recreate the array with same variables as last time interms of cluster size etc

its the software u need :)

now some data might not be recoverable as some might

usually one disk looses its partition thus invalidating an array

if you want i can recover the data for a ton

pm me if your interested

have you tried computer orbit?

first off i hope you get it sorted.

its obviously a bit (well a lot) more complicated with raid 0 to recover data from a failed drive.

Many people use raid 0 as its supposed to increase data transfer as the data is stripped across the drives. (tests have been carried out and this is not always the case)

I doubt very much whether Seagate or any disk manufacture will entertain assistance with the cost of data recovery, there answer will be its your responsibility to make adequate backups of your data.

And in all honesty raid 0 is the is the least reliable way of setting up any disk array as it will have the highest % failure probability as there is no redundancy and you have to add the failure rates of all the drives in the array. Raid 0 is not for data storage but more dynamic storage that can easily be recreated from a backup or re-install.

Having said all that have you tried Hard disk data recovery - R&R Data Managed Services Ltd they are R&R they have a 24 hour hotline. our company has used them on a particular drive that was u/s and they recovered all the data.

As i said i hope you get sorted.

Data Recovery Software - Hard Drive Recovery - RAID Data Recovery has the software you are on about. yeah ive checked them out but it only works if the drive is detectable and shows up in windows.

the thing is, the good one does detect and show up in windows, but the bad one halts the computer at the boot up screen for a bit (30secs to 1 min) and then goes to the windows loading splash screen and then halts the computer for abit againand then loads up into windows.

so this tells me that the computer knows that there is something there and it is trying to communicate with "something" but nothing is coming back

It does power up and spin, so that is a good sign

my gut feeling tells me it is to do with a firmware issue as highlighted on their website and around the net.

i am going to hopefully be contacted by seagate america on monday by a manager who could update me or i will call them myyself as I am under theimpression that there is due a firmware release on monday (how convenient!)

I doubt this though as the issue with my drive model number and firmware revision did have a firmware update BUT it was take off last january for "validation" and haasn't been put back up since!

Why sell these drives if they are known to have a fault and there is no remedy?

Ass wipes

What do you think about this though, i do have the paramters from the good drive, got them from BIOS. Is there any way in order to get communication to and from the drive?

I know someone on another forum mate who does data recovery forum is ********** dunno if you have heard of it can email him the info above if you want ive heard good things about the user and supposed be very cheap?

thanks for the reply and kind words mate.

yes i know i should have taken the time to back the disks up. Its all new to me and the retailer didnt give much advice at the time. i didnt really think that a few months down the line i would have a major catastrophe on my hands!!

having said that, i know that the data exists on the disk platters, so its just a case of trying to get the right method or advice to get the disk working again or have the cheapest, yet reliable company to help me.

looking at ur link now. i dont wanna call them after work hours, as they will definitely think its a major business emergency and bump the price up.

im sure there are a few people around who know their law.

i mean come on, if the drive is known to have probs, why allow it to be sold without poviding a remedy?

see if he gives a former student discount? lolz

thanks for replies so far guys, really appreciate it :)

dont worry mate, my 500gb external hdd fucked up on me, luckily the gf's dad got some of the info back for me, mainly pictures i was arsed about, once in a life time pics on safari.

also looked on there website and they only seem to have two stores, one in newcastle and one in gateshead, im sure they had more though.

Serial Attached SCSI there plug and play mate. Some below here ther eonly 2.5 inch as well:

HP (Hewlett-Packard) HP HDD/146GB 2.5" Hot-Plug 10K SAS SFF price - Compare HP (Hewlett-Packard) HP HDD/146GB 2.5" Hot-Plug 10K SAS SFFs prices at CNET.co.uk

You can get 15k versions really fast but proper expensive all depends what you want really in your hard drive (speed vs capacity)

I got too much to lose in terms of memories and pics. Lets just hope none of these firms try to take advantage of that.

Glad you got urs sorted. Lets hope I get mine too!!

Damn, too far. I'll give em a buzz tomoz

A lot less space but a whole lot more reliability!! makes me wish I had asked around before taking a dive!!
