hi - i dont do many miles, mostly around town, been told to take my car on motorway and drive for about 20 minutes at 2000 rpm to trigger dpf regenration otherwise i cud end uo with a hefty bill if dpf light is illuminated..how often should i do this..got a 2010 diesel car.

I had a Zafira 1.9 cdti
If i drove it round town for about a week the coil light would start flashing indicating the DPF filter wanted a regen
10 minutes along our local bypass at 60 - 70 mph did the trick...i had to do this atleast once every 2 weeks if i only did short journeys around the city.
DPF are a pain in the arse...

No harm in throwing a fuel cleaner into tank to clean egr and other things every now and again.

Now i know why cars have so many dented panels as they must be diesels:)

Euro 6 diesels will start a regen at any rpm or speed recognising its doing it so you have the car running long enough is this key. Ticking over at 1000rpm and an exhaust note change are tell tale signs.

Yours wont be euro 6 mate so look for the signs high tickover and a good long run will do a passive regen.

Ok ta, I'll have to give it a good run, now and then

Johnny is it a vag group motor?
if so buy your self a cheap elm 327 dongle, plug it into your car , connect to your android phone and install VAG DPF below, tells you all you need to know,

its a 2010 vw golf 1.6tdi .
can you recommend one that will do the job on ebay?..i saw THIS

Johnny also , do you know if the car has had the emissions fix applied ? if it has I'd have the software removed and the original factory software reinstalled. also as Its a 1.6 engne I think there will be an extra piece of pipe that will need removed once original software has been reinstalled

check your car here
Volkswagen Emissions & Recall Information : Volkswagen UK

Just checked online ..my car has the cheating software..

What do you mean Johnny? it still has the original factory software on it and hasnt been updated by VW dealers to the new emission software? if that is the case , do not go any where near a main dealer and ignore any letters from VW asking you to have the update performed. The fix software causes more problems to the engine than it fixes.
If it has already been updated. find a tuner who can remove the updated software (not overwrite) and replace with the original and also remove the extra pipe that has been fitted by the dealers

What I mean is I'm assuming that it has the cheating software installed so when I checked my vin got this, so do leave the car as it is? Or book it in? ..a bit confused lol..

Your car has not been upgraded but do not book it in ever and never take to VW for a normal service as they will update it without your permissions. Stay away from the dealers. If you get it updated it will cause you more problems than is worth it. just downlaod the apk , plug the dongle into your car and leave it there. check it once a week and if its nearing 100% take it for a 30 min run in 5th gear at @2000 revs it will do a regen/ No teh wifi version connects via wifi to your phone rather than connecting via bluetooth to your phone. you dont need wifi outside your house or anything

Ok buddy..that's a definite no no..lol, I won't take it to dealers, I'll leave it as it is..I'll get the Wi-Fi ve5sion one..thanks for your advice.. I was even thinking of selling the car and get a petrol one..

Upto you Johnny I bought one and it had had the update. broke down and repaired, I then got the software removed and cars been a dream since. As long as you give it a decent run out when it needs it instead of short journeys all the time

Ok will do I bought this item on eBay item number 183594137389
