THREE men have been charged with defrauding TV giant Virgin Media of up to £40m.

The trio have been accused of importing 44,000 digital receivers which could be made to pick up channels without paying a fee to Virgin.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the boxes would be sent electronic messages from a house in Littleover which would enable them to get the channels.

Anthony Ginnivan, Melvyn Howard and Jong You appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court yesterday, charged with conspiring to defraud Virgin Media of TV subscription services between February 1, 2010, and February 3 this year.

All three were arrested during a police raid at a home in Fernwood Close, Littleover, on Tuesday.

Andrea Charity, prosecuting, said the victim of the fraud was Virgin Media, which suffered a potential loss of £40m.

She said: "It is a complex fraud. Virgin Media provide digital receivers on a subscription basis in the UK."

She said 44,000 of these boxes had been imported with the sole use of obtaining channels without paying.

Ginnivan, of Fernwood Close, Littleover, and Howard, of Stoney Lane, Spondon, were given bail with the condition not to contact their co-accused.

You, who gave his address as the International Hotel, Burton Road, was refused bail and remanded in custody.

All three men will appear again at Derby Crown Court on April 28.

Malcolm Davies, Virgin Media's head of fraud and security, said: "We take this matter extremely seriously and will continue to work closely with all the police forces throughout the UK to prosecute individuals.

I wonder if they will get the IP addresses of all the clients logging onto the server?

i guess that card share is not as good as people think ohhh well back to the drawing board

Im sure it was all hosted on a foreign server?

If they were clever enough to import all those boxes and set up a sophisticated network earning all that money they should have been smart enough tohide their tracks and host it in outer mongolia or something.

So it's possible to C/S Virmin cable, not just sly

All very strange tbh !

I think we all know that the boxes were impoted legally by Wizardmods (afaik they pay tax and import duties etc) so i'm not sure how they can be accused of importing any boxes whatsoever. I'd guess thats some hype for the VM/Police press release to make the case look far bigger than it actually is.

The numbers also seem vastly over-inflated. The £40 Million divided by 44,000 boxes works out at over £900 per box if you assume all the boxes have been connected for the full year. Those 44,000 boxes have, of course though, built up over the course of the year. Some have been connected 12 months and some just a few days. Taken as an average lets say half of those boxes have been connected for 6 months which immediately reduces you to under £10 Million. There's also considerable doubt that the majority of the 'lost' customers would of been on a £75 per month package. I suspect you'd be lucky to see most of them on anything more than a basic package (lets say £20 per month) so the £10Million now comes down to a more reasonable £2.6 Million !

The actual raid seems quite interesting as it now seems (reported elsewhere) that it was nothing actually to do with VM or TV but about some entirely unconnected matter.

from what I know, if you can extract the RSA keys from a legit VM box then yes CS is possible.

But to my knowledge this has not been done, unless someone knows different?

Thats because you have no knowledge.

And are the three people associated to wizardmods? Also surely these boxes are legal, until they are flashed, or were these pre-flashed?

And who the hell runs a server from their home in Derby. No wonder the SV server keeps falling over. lmao KV FTW!

It can and has been done mate. From what I have read you need one of the older type box's to get the rsa key. So if you have a newer type box I believe you are kind of stuffed for CS using Dreambox or dbox. CoolGuy did actually talk about this a couple of months ago........The big difference here is that 1. There is not going to be a spoon-feeding type guide (Think everyone learned from what happened to Novice Angle from the shack days) and No. 2. Most people have the newer type box's where extracting the rsa key is proving a bit more problematic.

** Disclaimer - I do not CS cable I have a brand new type cable box. I have no in depth knowledge as I get what I need from other means. So no point in PM'ing me as I cant offer any real help.

I suppose they are legal untill flashed but in court along with the evidence of the server etc, they can't really say that they were importing them for FTA only.

They've remanded one of the 3, looks like they will really stick it too him to set the example.

I believe thats because he is not a UK resident and is therefore likely to flee unless detained. He also has no UK address (hence the hotel being given as his residence).

Meaning ? trying to be big and hard? keyboard worrier?:err:

I am big, just ask the misses ;)

And it would be KEYBOARD WARRIOR mate. Not a keyboard worrier lol.

And the point I was making was, that there has been numerous discussions, threads and even 2 sections dedicated to this, and your asking if it can be done. Try putting down the EDL/BNP press shots, and read the forums suggested, and I am sure you will find your answer.

I was trying to help you Emerald, but as usual you try and twist it to cause an argument. Perhaps you should take things at face value, rather than over analysing the situation.

Then accept my apology for misunderstanding you.
