A five-year-old girl who is battling cancer is recovering after two boys sprayed her with deodorant and tried to set her alight.

Scarlett Hellewell had to be rescued by neighbours when the pair pinned her down and attacked her with the aerosol can in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

She escaped with bruises when the deodorant did not set alight.

The two young boys, believed to be only 10 and seven ran off.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "The girl was playing when she was approached by two young boys.

"(They) kicked and punched her before spraying an aerosol in her face and attempting to set her alight. The match did not ignite."

Scarlett is suffering from a tumour which has left her blind in one eye and with marginal sight in the other.

Her mother Paula, 38, a home support worker, said she was hoping to move away from the estate where they live.

She told the Yorkshire Post: "I was disgusted when I heard what these boys had done, though this is not the first time they have attacked her.

"Scarlett's brain tumour is getting bigger and this was the last thing we needed to happen."

Neighbour Adele Brearley, 30, said: "Scarlett was really upset and her eyes were sore where they had sprayed deodorant. If they had managed to light the matches it would have been a lot worse."

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Don't blame the kids, blame their parents. If a minor commits a crime the parents should do the time.

I do blame the parents, the boys that did this are obviously out of control.

If anyone done this to my daughter, I would have seen to the kids and the parents. Fcuking sick and twisted world we live in.

While this may be appropriate in certain cases, unfortunately it would give some children too much power over parents who may legitimately be in over their heads with little psychos like that, and it doesn't address the actual problem, which is obviously the kids themselves, regardless of how they turned into monsters like that. You'd hope that there was some way to straighten kids like that out, but I'm really not sure there is.

Why? I'm sick of this argument. Children know right from wrong, regardless of being a minor or not.
Kids where around 10 and 7 in this case. They're not babies and I agree the parents are also to blame but for gods sake,if a child does this kind of thing then they are also to blame. NO child can turn around and say they didn't know this was wasn't an acceptable form of behaviour.
Perhaps we'll get the usual made-up medical diagnosis,ADHD,Aspergers...and basically all shit.
ADHD - in the old days it was called being hyperactive. No excuse to give a child ritalin which is also called kiddie cocaine. Try actually playing with them, this so called hyperactivity stems from a less than social enviroment.
ASPERGERS - your child is chronically shy. End of.

Both are not an excuse for the attacking of an innocent 5yr old girl. The only illness is the fact that they are evil little bastards who should be locked up AS WELL AS the parents.

he said blame the parents (whether he was serious or not is another matter).

who mentioned aspergers or adhd?

Señor, the point that I was trying to make was that generally speaking children are a reflection of their parents. Poor parenting and a serious lack of discipline from a young age usually lead to these little monsters being created rather than being born.

The solution as I mentioned earlier is discipline, that can come in the form of a big stick, enrolling them in the cadets or martial arts training; just as long as they are kept scared or in line.

Oh so true!

I agree with most of that, but the idea of universally punishing parents for their children's crimes is impractical and ineffective, certainly unless you do it on a case-by-case basis.

The reality is that too many people are simply completely unfit to become parents, but that never stopped them from making that "drunken mistake", and the sort of discipline parents like that would resort to - and often do - is the kind that turns the children into violent, maladjusted people as they grow older. The only effective fix is mandatory sterilization of thickos, and that's not a policy that's easy to find support for.

Where was the 5 year old girl, recovering from cancer playing?

In her garden, on the street, at a friends?

I have a 12 year old who fortunately is not recovering from any illnesses and he still doesn't play out the front. Not that I am trying to defend the boys that carried out the assault but perhaps the parents of the little girl should also have been more careful, she already said they were looking to move away from the estate.

As for the two little monsters that carried out the act, they need a good hiding. No doubt they come from single parent families with parents that don't really care what they do as long as they aren't in the house!

I was no angel as a kid, but would never hurt someone else in any way, even more so to a girl. Why do we want our children to grow up so quickly?

We allow them to come into contact with much more adult orientated material through the media at such a young age. They get to go out till all hours and basically run a muck.
