Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has edged closer to Real Madrid after handing in a transfer request at Anfield, according to reports.

The Spain international has been at the centre of a long-running transfer saga as La Liga giants Madrid have made no secret of their desire to secure a deal.

Liverpool have refused to budge from an asking price for Alonso in the region of £30million, which has stalled any potential move to the Bernabeu.

But the Reds may now be prepared to allow the former Real Sociedad star to leave following accounts he has submitted a written transfer request to the club's hierarchy.

Speculation suggests a deal will be struck with Madrid within the next couple of days for a fee reported to be in the region of £25m.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has maintained he does not want to sell Alonso, but the midfielder is said to have been angered by his manager's apparent desire to sell in order to finance an unsuccessful pursuit of Gareth Barry last summer.

The Reds signed Alonso for £10.5m in 2004, shortly after Benitez arrived on Merseyside, and the 27-year-old helped secure the famous UEFA Champions League final success over AC Milan in his debut season.

Couldn't agree more m8, Wenger fekked up big time (thank goodness). He is a really great player, with him playing it allowed Gerrard the freedom. I would have loved him to stay but I really dont blame him after the Barry saga.

I wish him well IF he does go, which looks very likely as I have said right from the start.

I don't think he will leave Roma mate however i think Aqualiani who is also at Roma could well be the replacement for Alonso!

i think its coz hes spanish, growing up they were always probably number one, its like you playing in spain and one of the top clubs in england wanting you, you would jump at the chance to come back home to england and play for one of the top sides.

It's the same wiht most of the young foreign players who come to england, once they're established 9/10 they will return there home country.....i think sooner rather than later the same will happen with fabregas aswell i think.

Can see Cesc leavin nxt season or possibly in Jan window, if Arsenal don't strenghten their squad big time, can see Arsenal finishing outside top 4 possibly 6th, and if their not in top 4 come Jan then I reckon Cesc will go back home to Barca, he has already said he would like to go back and for some reason Wenger likes to get rid of key players the last few seasons, Henry, Flamini, Toure, Adebayor and hasn't really replaced the, only real exciting signing was Arshavin and that dragged on forever

Toure is not the same player that won the league with arsenal in 2004 and wanted to leave in January, top man though and always played to his full potential but his full potential is not very good without someone of sol campbells, martin keowns stacture helping him out.

Adebayor is a cúnt of the highest order, Said he was as good as henry. Needs 6 shots to score 1, no gunner is sorry to see him GO!

Henry was 30 when he went and wenger got £16 million for him, made sense to me but out of the players you have mentioned he I agree about.

You also forget that Toure and Greedybollox go missing every january for the african nations for up too 2 months.

Arsenal are an easy target because we have not been taken over by some billionaires, and spending silly moneys on players.... I think we will upset a few faces this season, and do very well.... maybe not win the league but we will 100% not finish below the top 4.

I am happy with the team arsenal have, but I just worry about injuries as we seem to have a curse when it comes to the treatment table lol

Yh flamini went on a bosman but where was the contract offer that he deserved he was 1 of Arsenals best players 2 seasons ago, also Henry was the only player that could score 20+ a season and yes Toure and Adebayor do go missin Janruary but in the last few seasons they were always ever presents when available and who is their to replace them.

Wenger is the best at buying players and developing them into superstars ie. Cesc, Henry, Flaimini, Viera, Overmars etc but now is surely the time to buy proven players and give the youth department a break, he has been critisiced plenty of ties for not fielding English players but the youth team are prodominatly British and I applaud him for giving that a chance, any others wouldn't, but in the last 4 - 5 years what have they to show for it ....
