Are the old dreamboxes still useful?

Clearing out the attic I stumbled on a couple of my old DM500C's. Before chucking them I figured i'd have a look at these forums again.

It appears I have been missing some action, so to speak ;)

Ok. I got my old dreambox from the attic. Grabbed the Commando image, and flashed it using ftp, telnet. Ahh, the memories are flooding back... all that /dev/mtd3 stuff :)

So far I have only managed to get BBC2. I can't find my old remote control so have to use the web simulated one for now :(

Oh yeah, I put the lib file in /var/lib and chmodded 755 but am still missing a certain something.

The "interesting menu" doesn't work with the virtual remote, so I can't set provider area for fast scan. Going to make a cup of tea and search for the old one...

install the latest commando and have a read in the help file that
comes with latest commando, this will put you on track

Clone tuners are not great now for cable like the old days , l tried 2 and they kept missing channels

And because we all want hd and the lines are not cheap there isn't any point unless you have a line and just want to play like we all do lol

heres a backup l just did on 15d with mgcam and ccam

add line to var/keys newcamd.list

and scan your own area

Cheers smirnoff_rules!

lines, eh? ahh.. so the box has to be online to an "experimental server". not like the old DW Neutrino days with the ROM images.

I only wanted to resurrect the boxes as spares/bedroom TV and to play with. Don't really care about HD, but if there are no free experimental servers I guess that's the end of the road (unless there is something good on BBC2, lol!)

Thanks for the image anyway - works a treat other than the channel scan utterly failing still, which I guess is down to not having one of these lines I've also referred to as N-Line and C-Line

500C works a treat on cable, I've got one running in a bedroom. Latest Commando image with autobouquets works fine. But yeah "experimental server" lines are expensive compared to satellite, so unless you've also got a HD cable box like a 800SE with cable tuner it's not so great value for money. Still a hell of a lot cheaper than a legit sub though.

Hi guys,

Hi have a clone DM800se with an openpli image for satellite. If I swap the tuner to a cable one, do I need to re-flash image?

Thanks for looking

No but you would be adviced to run an OpenATV image as it has Cable Autobouqets and an inbuilt EPG sysmtem that takes the epg data from a virgin feed.

I used my old dreambox 500c for a month or 2 there, still plenty of life in the old dog. Commando 15d was rock solid. I only changed box as the tuner was missing out all but 1 of the main movie channels. I've still got a dbox2 kicking about but no one is owning up to having it, fancy mucking about with that again
