This is my predicament, We own a mini and the insurance premium full comp is £350.00 roughly. Now my daughter is about to take her driving test so I thought I would get a few quotes just to satisfy my curiosity. The cheapest is coming in at £4,250.00 ffs.

. What chance has any youngster got of building any no claims bonus up if they charge this much. All those lessons, passing her theory test only to be hit smack in the face with a fecking silly insurance quote. Have any of the members on here had any ridiculous quotes for there youngsters? are there any insurances companies out there that specialise in this field? one that doesn't need a second mortgage. :(

get them to do advanced driving test once there passed there test and this will half the insurance
also the trackers type insurance can be a good way to get youngsters insured

get a low insurance group car, fit a tracker, wait till they are 21, take advanced driving test, phone around, move a low risk area.

My neighbours 17 year passed and got a Ka last year, was paying around £1,700 for the year last year and under a grand this year.

Thanks mate I will tell her. The thing is once they pass there test they want to get out on the road don't they?. There was none of this tish when I passed my test many years ago. The last thing they need really is to have to pass another driving test just to satisfy scandalous money grabbing insurance companies. I have seen lots of youngsters out on the road with top of the range sports cars. How the hell can they afford the insurance? or are they not insured?. These black boxes mate? if it's a shared vehicle do we all get penalised if you take a corner a little too fast? or a couple of mph over the odds.

as said mate get them a group 1 insurance car i.e pug 106 .ford ka . fiat panda
least this way when the little bump happens it doesn't affect your no claims

Sound advice mate it looks like that is the route to go. She has always fancied them mini's so we bought one for her 18th Birthday last year. it will probably gut her to know she can only sit in it until she is 21 now. :(

Put you or the missus on as a named driver (not main driver). Also check out multi-car.

Will that work H?. :)

If you add a named driver (daughter MUST be the main driver) and that driver is 40+ with a good record then the risk gets reduced and you can knock quite a bit off even if they don't drive the car much - some more stuff here :)

Should have said, been doing this for years with my daughter - 3.5 tonner and a beamer aint cheap! Insurance company is fully aware and have no problem.

Yeah, it may help.

Also I should mention my neighbours son had a black box with limited mileage and hours. I don't think he was allowed out after 9pm.

you realise that you are still liable if you hit another car or worse injure somebody ? Average whiplash claim is around 3 grand.

I was offered a black box once, but that's another story....

Seriously though, my insurance quote went for £1600 a year (for me that is) to £618 per year with a box fitted, however and it's a big however it limited me to 3000 miles PER YEAR, which is just plain stupid.

There are more than one type though, some are mileage limitations, others are mileage, time and speed restrictions and some are just time/speed monitor restrictions. It just depends on how far you want to take it.

It's like tying your car up with a few hundred feet of rope and you cannot go beyond it. Too many rules mate but I suppose if you don't play ball you don't get insured. One question oneman they say insurance is cheaper from 21 upwards. If you pass your test at this age you are indeed classed as a novice driver are you not? then why is it cheaper?.

Insurance companies just do the numbers - collisions drop rapidly after 21 even taking into account length of time driving etc.

Miggy, is the car registered in your daughters name ?
If it is do not be tempted to put your name on the insurance and your daughter as a named driver as the insurance will be void !
The only real way round it is either a) get her a lease car with insurance included. or b) A little bit of skull duggery...................Use a car registered in either your or your wife's name and have it insured by whoever the car is registered to as the main driver, then add your daughter as the named driver, even then insurance companies will try to get out of claims should your daughter be driving at the time of a claim. So whoever is the main driver (as given to the insurance company) should leave a few small personal items in the car and your daughter should try and leave as few as possible items belonging to her in the car as this would then give the impression of the main insured as actually being the main driver.
Also there are a few insurance companies that also give the "no claims" bonus earned on the policy to named drivers when they decide to insure their own car, something else that is worth asking about when asking for quotes.
Another small point is that the cost of a policy with your daughter as a named driver but still a learner driver is usually quite a bit less than it becomes after she has past her test and the insurance companies expect you to inform them when the named driver has passed their test or again it becomes a get out clause for them.

slightly off topic.
I used to work for a performance car garage, one day a 18yrs old kid comes in with mommy n daddy and they buy the kid a £15 grand Mitsubishi evo 7 for his 18th birthday during the deal his insurance was sorted through the company because of his age etc, 25 grand just for his insurance.
Both paid for on Daddy's credit card there and then
Best part around 2 month later car came back on a truck mangled from a smash for a insurance look over, 1 wrote off car.

I know a lad, who used to own a Honda civic he got bored with it after a while and put it on it's roof and wrote it off down a country lane. He came back with a big smirk on his face saying thank fook I got rid of it and I can buy a new car with the insurance money now. It's with an attitude like that and the incident in your post that we all have to suffer and pay the high premiums. My Daughter needs this car for work I cannot keep taking her for the rest of her working career. @D 8 RCS The car is in my name on the log book.
