British Gas raises energy bills

SCOTTISH Gas were last night accused of misleading millions of customers over their shocking new price rises.
Users were furious to be told they would have to pay 35 per cent more for their gas.
But the Record can reveal that those who pay by direct debit will be even harder hit - with a 40 per cent hike.
That means the average annual household gas bill is going to jump by £234.35 from £588.29 to £822.64 - even worse than previously feared.
The details emerged yesterday as Scottish Gas parent company Centrica - the biggest domestic energy firm in the UK - posted half-year profits of £992million.
Graham Kerr, of consumer group Energywatch Scotland, said: "It's clear that Scottish Gas has misled its customers.
"Thirty five per cent was bad enough but 40 per cent is just eye-watering."
Last night, Scottish Gas could not say how many of their customers pay by direct debit - but industry insiders said it could be up to 75 per cent.
One said: "Make no mistake, this will affect millions of people not just in Scotland but throughout the UK. Energy firms have been trying to persuade people to pay by direct debit because it is less hassle.
"When Centrica announced the 35 per cent hike they were very quick to point out that they were not going to whack the poorest people who pay for by meters.
"But what they failed to point out was that the rest would have to pay not 35 per cent but 40 per cent. Why didn't they just come clean?"
A Scottish Gas spokeswoman said: "When we announce a price rise, the headline figures are the average for all consumers.
"We are writing to all our customers to confirm what their new prices are, and to offer advice on energy saving measures."
