As i bought a new AOC monitor it only had 1 hdmi port and a mini port and had no idea what that was so i bought this to use with new pc and using tv hdmi port for something different.

Just make sure what display port you have first.
There are passive and active display ports.

Passive ports will have "++" symbol next to them. With this you can use a straight through DP to HDMI adaptor.

Active display ports need a powered adaptor..something like this.

as far as i remember there are 2 different types of display ports, mini which you will find on Macs and the standard size you will usually find on everything else.

Becareful as the standard DP can sometimes be mistaken for a HDMI connection and for computers/monitors a standard DP will be the more common. confirm what your devices have before buying.

So surely you mean hdmi to display port?
And not display port to hdmi?

If your laptop has hdmi out then should you not be looking for a hdmi to dp?

Does your external monitor/screen have a dp connection?

i was looking to buy a vr headset thing but a freind said i needed a dp on my laptop so,thats why i was looking for something to plug a dp into with a hdmi out and into my laptop
