What's the best program for .mkv files

What's the best program to use for playing HD videos (.mkv)?

I loads with VLC but seems to freeze and stutter.

You could try MPlayer. I've never had any problem with it, and it's got features like frame dropping to ensure smooth playback. It's free so you could give it a try. To be honest, it sounds more like you're PC might not be up to spec?

I played a few samples with bsplayer and they were ok, as long as you have the proper codecs, although I thought vlc would have played them.

Installed the K-Lite codec and it's playing ok.
