Well the ones I have installed on my Desire and the one's I'd recommend are:

Astro File Manager
Basketball lite (nice gap filler if you're bored)
BBC news app
3G Watchdog (for monitoring your data usage if you have a cap.
ColorFlashlight (nice little app with different setting for using the screen as a flashlight.)

and of course the Barcode Scanner.

All apps are available on the Android Market for free.

shopsavvy is a good one. its a barcode scanner for checking out bargains when u are out shopping. scan the item and it searches the internet to see were u can get it cheaper, it also checks local shops to see if u can get it cheaper locally

chompsms is a good alternative txt messaging app. there is a free version on the market, but the paid for one is available in all the usual places.

I would heartily recommend:

Google Goggles
The Weather Channel
seesmic (twatter)
RAC Traffic
Hancent SMS
UpVise (cool web based shopping lists)
Talk to me (translates spoken words into foreign languages)
Google Skymap (constellation augmentation thingy)
Celeste (planet virtual augmentation thingy)
Radio time (radio stations)
beebplayer (iplayer)
Sky News
Shazam (music identification thingy)
360 Live (if you have a 360)

I have about another 60+ apps installed, but these are the ones I use most.

If you want any of the .apk's let us know :)

Also I could do you a games list if anyone is interested.

how do I go about installing this

just bluetooth it to your phone then open the notification, and it will install. then follow the instructions. once installed u can then download the maps u want

I have the turn by turn navigation Google maps on my Hero (VillainROM 5.5), works quite well but need a constant data connection.

this is why copilot is much better. the maps are stored on the memory card

You will need to install a file manager which u will get in the Android market on your phone

A task manager like "Advanced Task Manager" (many others available) will automatically kill off any memory hogging apps that you don't want running in the background.

i just been playing with layar and its quiet fun.
