what to get (very newbie questions)

It comes with a hdmi lead but his tv doesn't have hdmi, His tv is a 20" tv/monitor lcd can it still be used ?, I don't want the console on the big tv in the living room.

Are there games that only play in high def or do they do both.

Any help or even suggestions on a system would be appreciated.

all the games will play fine on the a normal Tv but the lead is show in the bundle it not a Hd Av lead
although it does say it supplys it with one Hd av lead is like this http://hardware.teamxbox.com/screenshots/screen/42547/Xbox-360-VGA-HD-AV-Cable/
which you dont want for a normal tv, you want a lead like the show in the Box picture

not a bad deal there,the av lead it comes with will either connect straight into tv,or into a scart adapter so that it can connect via scart into rear of tv/if that is avalible on his tv.
as said about games you have no problem playing them at all on standard tv.
