What software for movie indexing?

Hi all, the lads at work have all chipped in and got an external hard drive for me to put some films and series's on for nights when they are not too 'busy'.
The file formats will mainly be avi and mp4, played on VLC
To make it easy for the people at work what im after is some software that will do something like have an index of all movies on hard drive, so they can just click movie they want and it will auto play.
Possible also auto running when external drive is plugged in?
Is there anything out there like this?

XBMC or my movies which also integrates with windows media center will both catalogue movies based on folder name and download meta data. XBMC will also play them back.

One thing i forgot, the pc that this will be played on will not let me install anything, so will need to be installed on hard drive if possible?

you can run XBMC as a O/S so if you can boot the PC from USB hard drive you could install it on there,

Create and install from/to a bootable USB flash drive - XBMC
