What is a Flux Pen?

I am trying to learn soldering (not started yet) but seen a vide clip of an atmel removal.
the chap applys liquid flux and then removes the atmel.
he then applys the liquid flux again the the area the Chip was removed from - cleans it with cloth then reapplys the flux to where the chip leg mountings will be and resolders the chip back on with a Solder gas iron.

Ive got a solder gas iron. But need to know what does a liquid flux do? is it solder?

the liquid flux cleans the area and helps the solder to flow better.

the cloth u say is a medi swab (isopropyl alcohol)

Depending on what you are soldering you may not need to use a seperatu flux. Most electronics work does not require one .

from what I remember as a surface mount operator the flux also distributes the heat and is more vital when removing a chip.We used it when putting a chip back as it just made life easier
