What is the best free AV proggy out there?

I normally use AVG, but some are now saying Avast?

So what is the best ???

I think it's largely a personal choice between Avast and AVG. They have always been popular, though several people have reported recently that AVG 9 is slower than previous incarnations and giving false positives, though often without stating what file is reported as being virulent (e.g. it's not uncommon for keygens and other warez to be quarantined).

Comodo is becoming more widely recommended on DW.

MS Security Essentials is getting some good feedback too...

Dunno if it was bad timing but i installed free avast a few weeks back and was bombarded with viruses and trojans :( put back me free antivir and all is well :proud:

I changed from avast! to Avira Antivir Personal, on a whim rather than for a specific reason a few months ago and never had any probs. (The full Avira suite is on the PCPro A-List which is generally a good indicator).

Depends on what programs and erm stuff your running tbh.
I found Avira is good on detection but it also calls a lot of false positives and is updates were dodgey sometimes.
I found running Avast with 10bit360 and malwarebytes was a pretty solid set up.

Avast and Avira come tops (or V close to) on most of the security polls, even when up against some of the paid for releases.

Avast for me. It's the bollox.

Avira is decent too though, it's a bit vulnerable to a fair few false positives though.

I use Clamwin all the time, never had a problem with it, stopped using AVG as it appeared to slow my PC down, tried a few of the others mentioned but didn't like them, I suppose it's a personal choice at the end of the day, you could download them all and try each one for a few weeks and see which one you like.

Sump

lol, i hear the Avira comment. on the positive side though, my wife no longer downloads those things that make messenger such a prize for the virus specialists. I'm, quite, unpopular on the Avira forum (though i understand this will seem strange to those who know me lol), mainly because of this update problem. it even effects the "pro" version. they keep telling people to stop commenting on it, as they are, for the most part, using the Free version. so customer service and help is patchy. it still stops more problems than any other AV out there, even paid ones.

i doesn't matter what one you get there is always another one better Ive went from avg to avast to Avira now i have super anti spy-ware and PC guard but in a few months time i will prob have something else its better to shop about as there is always a new one coming out,

I've had Avast for the last 3 years or so. Been very happy and had no problems so haven't felt the need to change.
I've used Mcafee and Norton a long time ago and thought they did more damage than good (though that was a long time ago so they will have changed and besides they're not free).

AVG used to be up there with the best of them, but the recent version is pretty much "bloatware".

I'm running Avira on the Mrs's machine at the mo' with no prob's at all.

Of course there are full versions available in the usual places, but how effective or legit these versions are is anyone's guess.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with them. i often wonder if i am the only one who sees the, possible, irony of protecting yourself with, CRACKED, security software. i'm not saying they wont work. its just the most glaring oxymoron i can think of.

I've looked at the "premium" version. all it offers over the "free"b is:
"Web guard", the WOT plugin for firefox, does a good job of this.
"Email scanner" fair enough addon but, personally i have no problems without one.
"Rescue system". lets you make a boot rescue disc. hands up those who cant, already, do that.
"Antidrive" malware/spyware protection. already got that, for free. and it works very well.
"Anti phising" already offered by IE7+ and firefox.
ordinarily for £12 it would be a steal. but because of the free one, not so much. to me it makes the risk of using a crack, to achieve so little extra. not worth the effort. and the updates still cause problems. lol

I have been running avast free along side Iobit and Iobit 360 with rapport for selected websites that I use often.

I have never had a problem with anything, The odd tracking cookie which 360 finds right away.
