Wd Formating Problems

Hi
I've just brought a Western Digital 320Gb SATA HD
When I format (NTFS ) it freezes after 88%
However a quick format works fine. The vendor has told me this is not a problem (but he would say that)
Is this a major issue? Will the drive be more likely to corrupt at a later date?

When you say it freezes @ 88% how long are you leaving it?

Also what SW are you using to format?

It's now been formating at 88% for over 1 hour

I'm using XP administrator/computer management tools,

I haven't tried partioning the drive
I just wanted one big drive, I make a lot of video files so I'll fill it fairly quickly over time

It can take upto 3-4 hours sometimes to do a full format.

Leave it running and see what happens

the counter could be counting wrong

I recently bought a brand new 400gb sata (west digital) and had problems with it freezing, sent it back as it was fooked - I thought they were meant to test the products at the manufacture stage!!!

It's now approx 3-4 hours but it's only got to 89% (from 88% - thats 2-3 hours for 1%)
I'm going to leave it running but it does seem a bit strange

No I'm using XP administrator/computer management tools

it once took about 8 hours to format a drive on my PC once, if you are running other apps it will slow down as a format is a low prority task

Thanks but I found the program, it worked fine, cheers for that.
I'm now looking for a program that will copy my c: drive exactly onto another drive

I use Ghost to clone existing drives onto new larger drives, works fine everytime for me !

Yes norton ghost is the best, look for ghost 9 or 2003 dont use the latest ones

the new ghost installs a load of crap on, the original versions are more stable and easier to use

I use DriveImageXML. A very decent free program - as you can browse and extract files from the image file
