vod picture size

Please can anyone throw some info on this, when viewing movies on vod the picture appears to be zoomed in a bit and titles disappear off the edge of the screen, I've tried different modes ie. 4:3 - 16 :9 - fill all - normal - shrink , there seems to be endless possibilities but the results are all the same. I think the majority of feature films are around 1.85 to 2.35 :1 aspect ratio so does the ccs dictate how much picture manipulation they can endow us with, or is there a way for us to see the full width of the screen even though there would be bigger black bars above and below.
