Need some advice from our car guys here :)

My Daughter bought a 55 reg Vauxhall Astra Auto about 6 months ago, the other day it would not select a gear. the AA came and took it to our local Vauxhall dealer and on inspection they have said that the coolant from the rad has bled into the gearbox via the oil cooler pipes and fecked the box ! and they want thousands to put it right, on having a read about a few people have had this problem and it sems a common fault

My question is can the gearbox be flushed through with new fluid or will it need a new gearbox as Vauxhall say ?

Second question is if it does need a new/recon box does anyone know a decent mechanic who could do the work ? we are in the Kent/SE London area

Thanks for any help and advice guys

if u cant select gears its probably fooked but no harm in trying to flush it out and put new fluid

but u need to fix rad cooler pipes

u could see if u can get a second hand gearbox from scrappy and get it fitted at a indipendant garage

Thanks fes, I have seen a couple of second hand boxes for under £300, but do they need to be coded to the car ?

I don't think so m8
I think it's only the electronic gear stick that's coded

Thanks again mate :)
