Newcastle will receive a total compensation package of around £10million for the injury that kept Michael Owen sidelined for more than 10 months, according to the Evening Chronicle.

Owen, 27, suffered knee ligament damage against Sweden in the World Cup last summer and only returned to action in the Magpies' Premiership clash with Reading on May 1 this year.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd battled with FIFA and the FA to ensure he received what he felt was a just amount of compensation and the parties now appear to have reached a settlement.

A club source, quoted in the Chronicle, said: "We have finally reached a comprise with FIFA and the FA regarding Michael Owen, and when you take into account the fact that his wages have been paid in full for two years and the compensation we have received, it'll amount to around £10million.

"And let's just say we are happy, and it has been well worth Freddy Shepherd's fight."
