It's so irritating when the system is non-bootable and nobody created a repair/rescue disk! I mean, all the files you need to boot Vista are on the HD where they remain, useless.

Of course, you can copy them off using a variety of tools but you'll just get a load of files, not a bootable ISO.

However, with a bit of jiggery-pokery you can build a boot DVD for pretty much any OS.

I found the files I wanted on the recovery partition in a directory called Vista so copied them off to another machine.

To make this lot boot I used ImgBurn which can create bootable ISOs, just select the option to create an image from files and folders, set the source as the directory structure copied and the target as a temporary directory\ImageName then click on Advanced.

burn-vista-dvd-4.png

Complete as in the above screen then create the ISO.

Burn the image to disk and voila! Bootable Vista setup/recovery disk!

If your 'other' machine is Linux (as mine is) then you'll be pleased to know ImgBurn runs perfectly in 'Play on Linux' :)
