27 March- The directive has been amended

Amendment 44
Proposal for a directive
Article 18 – paragraph 1 – introductory part

Text proposed by the Commission Amendment
1. The following nicotine-containing products may only be placed on the market if they were authorised pursuant to Directive 2001/83/EC: 1. Nicotine-containing products may only be placed on the market if they were authorised pursuant to Directive 2001/83/EC.
Or. en
Justification
Analyses show that e-cigarettes contain chemicals and components which pose danger to consumers. For that reason, all NCP should be subject to control. Otherwise, products with levels of nicotine concentration just below the proposed thresholds, could reach the market without any authorisation. Not only a concentration of nicotine is relevant but a mixture of all substances is too. Consumers indicate as well, that they mainly use e-cigarettes to quit smoking, seeing it as a medicinal product, therefore they should be authorised in accordance with Directive 2001/83/EC.

So what are they saying? lol :)

They cant ban them outright or they could try
all the stuff you need is available from many sources
PG/VG is used for tons of stuff from medicine to shampoo
Nicotine is used in many thinks like pesticide for farmers etc etc
Flavoring is available in its thousands of places
also the equipment (battery/Tanks/Coils/Wicks is widely available also

so i cant see them doing anything that can harm us the Vapers getting our gear :)
but they can stop every wanna be Joe`s opening shops/Websites selling Nicotine Juices

they want stop the Chinese selling them as they will just tell the fluck off :)

I think it might be more about raising monies from the sale of them m8,it was bound to happen as soon as people started using them more then tobacco :(

Yes this is blatantly down to the tobacco companies and the government sucking each other off!

Ya that`s all its about
the Tobacco company's/Government losing out on Tax`s :)

I dont smoke at all now but its typical,as soon as something comes along to replace a long time cash cow they jump on it

You can be sure that the big tobacco companies are already in the market somewhere along the line and if it all gets taxed and licensed you can be sure that they will be there with the product ready to cash in !!

There was a good discussion on the radio here in Ireland about ecigs during the week

http://player.todayfm.com/player/sh...oper/2724/the_very_last_word__saturday_100813

Starts 27mins in. James Reilly is our Health Minister, and Enda Kenny (Taoiseach) is our Prime Minister. Lister to the government mouthpiece squirm 37min in as he is asked why not ban REAL cigarettes if they are so concerned about peoples health.

Tobacco companies are shitting themselves about loss of revenue, pharmaceutical companies are shitting themselves about loss of sales of their patches/gum products, and governments are shitting themselves because of 1) loss of customs & excise and VAT on tobacco sales and 2)if smokers quit, they'll live longer, costing more to the health service. Bastards.

I think it's fair to say that e-cigarettes should be brought under regulatory control. I doubt that Government and Tobacco companies are in cahoots over this. I also don't agree that Government licensing e-cigarettes has anything to do with setting up a new tax stream to replace another. I think they have an obligation to ensure a product being used for medicinal value be offered for sale under some control. The financial savings to health care systems in providing care for people with tobacco related illnesses would surely outweigh the loss in tax revenue from reduced sales of tobacco products. So overall, legislating for e-cigarettes is a good thing imo!
