Senior Labour MP Martyn Jones has tabled an Early Day Motion to highlight the issue of Sky's recent subscription price hike for bars and pubs.

Last week pubs around the country voiced their anger at the broadcaster's decision to raise prices by up to 22% from this September, a move which could see fees for some establishment top £1000/month.

"This price increase is 'pie-in-the-sky', and could prove to be counter-productive for BSkyB. The company has built its success on precisely this kind of customer and target audience in pubs and clubs," said Jones of his motion.

"It has almost become a part of the nation's culture to watch the big match down the local. This price 'hike' could well end that, as landlords and landladies will not be in a position to pay the increase. I think this move will backfire on Sky."

In the motion, Jones has also called on the Office of Fair Trading to re-open an investigation into Sky's pricing structure for such premises.

"The increase will affect around 30,000 licensed outlets across the country, and landlords in my area are furious at the extent of this price rise. Its just too much to ask of the local pub," he added.

"As result of this move Sky will lose subscribers and advertising revenues, the pubs will lose customers and football will lose out with fewer matches being shown in pubs. No one will come out of this a winner. A review has be to be set-up immediately in time for the new season."
