Hello Guys

Where will be the best place near Liverpool to see the northern lights tonight?

Met Office experts have given hope of a 'slight chance' the Northern Lights will be visible in parts of the UK on Friday night (May 17). Ever since the stunning display last Friday (May 10) households have been hoping for another chance to see the breathtaking aurora.

According to the weather experts "there remains a slight chance of glancing Coronal Mass Ejection impacts overnight on Friday, May 17 into Saturday, May 18". A spokesperson added: "These may bring some limited enhancement to the aurora, with the slight potential of allowing for some visibility as far south as northern Scotland or similar latitudes."

Weather expert Krista Hammond believes the sunspot region will be rotated back towards Earth in around 10 to 12 days, which could pave the way for another geomagnetic storm and some stunning Northern Lights displays. She said: “The sunspot region will be be coming back round onto the Earth facing side of the sun."

Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles. The sun is currently in the most active period of its 11-year cycle. Ms Hammond continued: “We’re currently at solar maximum and we’re seeing more sunspots. If we see more sunspots, we see this increased frequency in space weather and therefore the aurora.” Despite this, the forecaster downplayed chances of a full repeat of last weekend's phenomenon.
