Ian Pearson, Northern Ireland's minister for the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI), has promised broadband will be available to 100 per cent of Northern Ireland's population by the end of 2005.

DETI is financing the project, which will be carried out by BT. The service will be delivered at a minimum of 512 kbps using a combination of wireless and DSL technology. Broadband connections will be available to end users from a range of suppliers.

"By the end of 2005, every household and every business in Northern Ireland, no matter how remote, will have access to broadband at the same price," said Pearson. "This vitally important contract will deliver on the government's broadband vision of a fully connected Northern Ireland and will make our country more competitive in the global economy."

Pearson claims Northern Ireland will be the first region in Europe to achieve 100 per cent broadband penetration
