my mate has a 360 with a fecked dvd drive . can he mod it to play games off an external drive or will he need to buy a new dvd drive for it ?

sorry mate. i'm completely new to this. what does jtaged mean. and can my mate do it with his ?

It is very unlikely he will be able to jtag it unless he has not used it on live for over a year.
To swap the dvd drive, you will need to purchase one of the smae type (you can spoof types but forget this to keep it simple), extract the key from the current drive, install key to the new drive, then install drive.
To extract the key you will need a certain sata port on your pc, and possibly some hardware depending on drive type.
If it is a once off thing for you to do, you will be better off getting some one else who has done it before and has the tools to do it.
