Any Wii's released in December - ie, UK Wii's, are made with the tougher strap. Its not just the games they make tougher for us...

I've got 4 wiimotes, the extras coming with wii play. The console one has the new thicker cord the wii play ones all have the older thin cord. You can see the difference here:
