Nickelodeon has announced it will be celebrating its twenty-fifth year on air by closing down for three hours and telling kids to go outside and play.
From 12pm-3pm on October 2, Nickelodeon's US channel will close down. Instead of regularly scheduled programming such as Jimmy Neutron, full-screen stills bearing a "Worldwide Day of Play" logo will be aired. From 3-6pm, regular programmes will be shown. At 6pm, live coverage of Day of Play events in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and cities around the USA will air. At 8pm, the channel will air a live event involving "physical competitions between teams made up of Nickelodeon stars, athletes, real kids and Olympic athletes."
"Pre-empting programming on a Saturday is one part of our overall commitment to empower kids to get up, get moving and achieve a healthy life balance," explained Nickelodeon Television president Cyma Zarghami. "These on-air events and the Worldwide Day of Play itself are the next steps in our goal to help kids get the resources needed to live and learn about active, positive lifestyles."
On-air messages promoting healthy lifestyles will be airing on Nickelodeon in the UK.
