Newcastle boss Chris Hughton hailed his side's "wonderful achievement" after they secured Premier League promotion.

The Magpies' top flight return was sealed by rivals Nottingham Forest's 0-0 draw with Cardiff - guaranteeing the league leaders a top-two finish.

"From day one the focus has been to put everything into this," said Hughton ahead of the visit of Sheffield United.

"These group of lads have had a real desire to get back into a division that everyone here thinks we should be in."

Newcastle's 16-year stay in the Premier League ended on 24 May last year after a tame 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa.

However, on Saturday St James' Park was the scene of a promotion party for the Toon Army, who have seen their side lose just four times in the league all season.

"Securing promotion with six games to spare is testament to this set of players," Hughton told the club's official website.

And the 51-year-old former Tottenham defender immediately set his his sights on guiding the Tynesiders to more glory by winning the Championship title.

"It's important [to win the title] because that's were we've been most of the season and we want to stay in that position," he said.

"We want to celebrate promotion with victory in front of our magnificent fans," the former Republic of Ireland international added before kick-off against the Blades.

I am sure both Sunderland and Newcastle will welcome back the derby.

I for one am glad they made it back and especially with Houghton and not some manager the fans begged for then wanted dumped after a bad start(big Sam).
