This is a quick intro to cloning only, it didn't take long so it may be totally useless, I will add to it if i think of more.

Ok so you want to clone a modem but you are confused by all the jargon, Well it is quite simple really, Here’s how it works.

This is relevant to both nthell and twest

Cable modems have a unique MAC address assigned to each of them, Mac addresses are always 12 digits/letters and look like this (0a-0d-4e-5f-44-d3).
Also tied to this mac address is the config file the modem is allowed to have from the provider, The config file is what specifies your upload/download speeds and any caps associated to the mac.
Now of course twest or nthell only allow modems with mac addresses they have approved onto there network.
Now not just any mac address works, The providers split areas up into manageable networks, These can range from about 2-20 miles in distance and macs from your network cant be sniffed and then used again on your network or they just fight each other (your modem and original legit one) so you either have to go to a friends house or swap with others close but not on the same UBR as you.
To tell what UBR you are on look here

Just to recap to get the modem running you need to get the mac address of another working modem that’s not on the same UBR as you (also known as a gateway) and put it on your modem.

Getting mac’s

The easiest way is to download a program called dhcpforce, Open it up, Click DHCP and then start sniffing, You will need to leave this running for a while (1-10 hours) and soon you will see Mac addresses appearing in the left column, There will be lots of duplicates so when your finished right click the on the pile of macs and and choose Remove>Duplicated macs, Now you have a list of swappable or useable macs.
Config filename shows the config associated to that particular mac.

Now what

Well that depends on what modem you have.

Nthell users will have either ambit 100/120/200 modems, To change the Mac address on your wanna be clone you need a max232/233 serial cable.

Go here for info on that.

Twest users will have a Motorola surfboard 31/41/42/5100 some of the 31/41/4200’s can have the firmware changed over the network and some need a max 232/233 cable, I’d always recommend having one anyway because they are very handy.
The firmware on surfboards can be changed to either sigma/fiberware or hackware but that’s way beyond this little intro.

There are to many tutorials available but this one is a good start.
