A Kickstarter campaign for Neil Young’s high-fidelity music store PonoMusic has reached more than $2 million in pledges since launching on Tuesday, March 11.

Pono Music aims to bring back a ‘high quality’ listening experience to portable devices through a high-resolution music store and player.

The figure far surpasses the campaign’s original goal of $800,000 and there’s still 33 days to go. Over 7,000 contributors have backed the project so far.

Pledges range from $5 for “love and thanks” to $5,000 for a "VIP dinner and listening party” with Neil Young himself.

The Pono Player is a purpose-built device, designed by audio engineers, to let users hear high quality Pono Music as close to its original recorded resolution as possible.

A Pono Music App (for Mac or Windows PC) provides access to the PonoMusic.com Store, where users can browse, search, purchase and download high-resolution music to their computer and transfer it onto the Pono Player.

Pono Music files have about six times more musical information than a typical mp3. With ultra-high resolution recordings (192kHz/24 bit), the difference between a PonoMusic digital file and an mp3 is about 30 times more data from which the player reconstructs the “song”.

"Pono Music is an end-to-end ecosystem for music lovers to get access to and enjoy their favorite music exactly as the artist created it, at the recording resolution they chose in the studio," says the description.

"Pono Music is more than just a high-resolution music store and player; it is a grassroots movement to keep the heart of music beating. Pono Music aims to preserve the feeling, spirit, and emotion that the artists put in their original studio recordings."
