Singer Morrissey has slammed the coverage of the London 2012 Olympics for its "blustering jingoism" - and likened the "foul patriotism" to the Germany of the Nazis.
In a statement posted on True To You - an online Morrissey fanzine - the former frontman of The Smiths outlined his distaste for the media attention given to the Royal Family and the sense of British spirit.
He goes on to say that the "spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain", as a result of the Olympics coverage.
The statement reads: "I am unable to watch the Olympics due to the blustering jingoism that drenches the event. Has England ever been quite so foul with patriotism?
"The 'dazzling royals' have, quite naturally, hijacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. It is lethal to witness.
"As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters.
"Meanwhile, the British media present 24-hour coverage of the 'dazzling royals', laughing as they lavishly spend, as if such coverage is certain to make British society feel fully whole."
He added: "As I recently drove through Greece I noticed repeated graffiti seemingly everywhere on every available wall. In large blue letters it said: 'WAKE UP WAKE UP'.
"It could almost have been written with the British public in mind, because although the spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain, the 2013 grotesque inevitability of Lord and Lady Beckham (with Sir Jamie Horrible close at heel) is, believe me, a fate worse than life."
Morrissey was also heavily critical of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June, comparing her reign to a dictatorship and describing the celebrations as "a new lesson in the force of tyranny".

As outspoken as ever, not sure i agree though !

Nowadays he's old and irrelevant, why anyone would take any notice of him I'll never know, and that's coming from a smiths fan!

Sent from my telephone.

Morrissey is a celtic fan, this is the view of most celtic fans tam.
they hate anything that is red white and blue.

I'm not sure which opinion is more idiotic. Morrissey's or surfbum's.

he speaks of nazis yet he is communist by all accounts there one and the same in my eyes. He is entitled to his opions I suppose but I cant really remember anyone actually asking him for it. THere is nothing wrong with a nation supporting its sporting legacy, there is nothing wrong with a bit of patriotism, its being part of something bigger than yourself which is natural. The only thing I would say is that I could not get into the olympic torch relay across the country as this is something that was in fact invented by the nazis.

i'm glad all the "pre-olympics doom and gloom" being pushed out by ALL the news agencies about how terrible it was going to be, have now changed their tune.

as the advert once said...."P.M.A - Positive Mental Attitude" don't let the negative pull you down

Buried in the venom, bile and curious choice of words (e.g. Royal's empirical needs?) there are a few good points...

The 'brand police' did nothing to enhance the experience and, in the stampede for sponsorship, a few large corporations probably got more power than was reasonable or fair...

...I'm sure there's more buried in there but it's sunny, the garden calls :)

Try being British, especially English, in Ireland! I see plenty of Irish tricolour flags at the Olympics, tolerated as they should be. Now, try waving a Union Flag in Ireland (Republic of) and see what happens....Morrisey has Irish roots, as do I. He should remember where he lives, and which country is so tolerant of this type of bile....

Been there. Done that. ;)

yep, you can lay their women. but try to buy, own and renovate a house, there.
you get fcuked right back, in spades.

my place was in ST Pois. the majority of the people (oddly enough) were really nice. but getting anything done. a true pain in the arse.
and there was me thinking Manyana , was a Spanish thing.

oops forgot the topic.
