Manchester Dogs' Home fire: More than £49,000 raised by supporters after blaze kills 43 animals

A fundraising page has been inundated with donations to help the charity following the devastating fire

A fundraising page set up to help Manchester Dogs' Home following a devastated fire has been inundated with donations.

At least 43 dogs have died after a blaze swept through the centre in Harpurhey, Manchester, this evening.

Around 150 more dogs were rescued and many needed treatment.

The devastating fire has caused severe damage to the Manchester Dogs' Home, with sources suggesting it may have to be pulled down entirely, the Manchester Evening News reports.

More than 20 firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night.

Greater Manchester Police said the cause of the fire was being investigated.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

The Manchester Evening News created a JustGiving page tonight in support of the charity - which has been sheltering animals since 1893.

In the space of just a few hours, more than £49,000 has been raised and #ManchesterDogsHome was trending on Twitter.

Hundreds of local people gathered outside the home offering blankets, leads and food in support of the rescued animals.

Pictures of the blaze were posted on social media by concerned people living near to the rescue home.

Shortly after the fire broke out, residents said they could hear "dogs yelping'.

One wrote on Twitter: "Big fire at Manchester Dogs Home, apparently the building has collapsed, too late for the animals by all accounts.... Heartbreaking."

Another added: "Manchester dogs home is on fire with all the dogs yelping."

The block which was on fire was Block 5 - the shelter's medical department but the fire then spread to other kennel areas.

Members of staff - fighting back tears - have told how they cannot believe what has happened.

Manchester Dogs Home need blankets, leads, crates if anyone is local and can get there? #pawcircle

One witness said the fire 'engulfed' the building in seconds, quickly becoming 'a huge fireball'.

He ran back to his house to get wirecutters to try and save the dogs but by the time he returned the fire was too powerful.

Elaine Farquarson, 69, one of the home's regular supporters, said: "We are all in absolute shock. Just shock. We have rallied around with the neighbours to bring stuff that the home were asking for.

"We have brought blankets and a container and bedding."

Two hero dog lovers risked their lives to run into the blaze and rescue 20 dogs at the height of the fire.

Jason Dyer, 41, and his nephew Dean Rostock, 25, jumped over the fence into the dogs home and kicked open kennel doors after hearing dogs barking in panic.

Between them the pair rescued around 20 dogs, putting leads on them and bringing them to safety before tying them to a nearby fence.

Jason said: "All the windows of where the dogs are advertised for sale were blown out and the ceiling was collapsed.

"We initially ran into the bit that was on fire but we couldn't get those dogs out. We went to the other kennels and began kicking out the doors. We just wanted to get them out.

"This place is part of our childhoods. We both have dogs and love dogs - of course we are going to run in there. We just wanted to make sure as many as possible would be okay."

Apparently a 14 yr/old local youth has been arrested in connection with the fire. :Angryfire

Brilliant that so many people are helping but what was that young lad thinking?! If/when his name gets out he'll be in some serious trouble!

Over £1000000 now, it's a shame it takes something as horrific as this to get people to donate to such a worthy charity (probably more than they would receive from 10 normal years donations).

He's probably in line for the "Young Businessman of the Year" award.:Angryfire

Don't think his life will be that pleasant for the foreseeable future and thoroughly deserved.
